The lunar surface sensing probe attached to each landing gear footpad, except the forward one, is an electromechanical device. The probes are retained in the stowed position, against the primary strut, until landing gear deployment. During deployment, mechanical interlocks are released permitting spring energy to extend the probes so that the probe head is approximately 5 feet below the footpad. Sponsored by ISAS [Institute of Space and Astronautical Science-Japan], this probe is to explore the interior structure of the Moon and could provide key data for understanding the origin of the solar system and planetary formation. It is a 520-kg spacecraft to be launched on ISAS's newly-developed M-5 rocket. Following a gravity-assist manoeuvre, it will fly as close as 40 km from the Moon and deploy three 13-kg seismic penetrators. These will burrow 30 cm into the lunar crust. The spacecraft will then be repositioned into a 300-km orbit. The seismic probes will be able to monitor deep moonquakes, mapping the lunar core.  1, fiche 3, Anglais, - Lunar%20A

In August 25 students from ten countries took part in a design workshop held at ESTEC in The Netherlands. This giant disk floating in space... is a power generator harvesting energy from the Sun for a variety of uses back on Earth. Such spaced-based power generators have many applications, not just on Earth, but also in space.
