A coal maceral formed from the hardened outer cover of plant epidermal cells.

CONT

Cutinite. While not very abundant, this maceral is commonly found in most coals and is derived from the waxy outer coating of leaves, roots, and stems. It occurs as long stringers, which often have one surface that is fairly flat, and another surface which is crenulated. Cutinite usually has a reflectance that is equal to that of sporinite. Occasionally the stringers of cutinite are distorted. Because cutinite occurs in sheet-like fragments and is very resistant to weathering, it is sometimes concentrated in weathered coals to which it gives a sheet-like appearance.

A coal lithotype appearing as stratifications parallel to the bedding plane and usually having a silky luster and scattered or diffuse reflection.

CONT

The brightest layers are composed chiefly of the maceral vitrinite and the duller layers of the other maceral groups exinite and inertinite. Clarain exhibits a silky lustre less brilliant than that of vitrain. It seems to have originated under conditions that alternated between those in which durain and vitrain were formed.

The term microlithotype was developed to permit the designation of rock types within coal that are at a microscopic scale and their definition is based on maceral percentages. All macerals have a suffix "-inite" and microlithotypes have the suffix "-ite. "Thus, layers greater than 0. 05 mm in thickness and consisting of greater than 95% vitrinite are termed vitrite. Bimaceral(clarite, durite and vitrinertite) and trimaceral(duroclarite and clarodurite) microlithotypes have names that are derived from lithotypes rather than macerals.
