Horizontal grinders have a large, horizontal, conveyor system that moves material laterally towards the mill. A set of knives, arranged to be raised and lowered by hand, used to slice fish into several pieces of predetermined length.

The machine would take the fish tail first and cut off all the fins, then slit the belly and used two rotary wire wheels to rip the guts out(and make quite a mess). Next the fish went into the gang knife which cut the whole fish into pieces that were as high as a can. The pieces fell onto a conveyor belt and were fed into the rotary fish filler. This machine took the fish pieces and compacted them into can sized lumps and then stuffed them into a can and added a pinch of salt for flavor.

A peanut blanching machine [includes] an endless conveyor having a horizontal top reach extending along a predetermined path and adapted to carry nuts thereon. A rubbing apron is disposed in spaced relation above the reach and the nuts are adapted to be frictionally engaged between the two elements to facilitate removal of the skins. The apron is preferably slightly inclined downwardly toward the reach in the direction of movement thereof to trap the nuts between the apron and reach and increase the frictional pressure thereon.

Mechanical street sweepers are the "heavy duty" machines of the industry; having the capability to move the most material in the least amount of time. This general class of street sweeper utilize a system of brooms and either a "squeegee" or belt conveyor to move debris from the ground into a hopper contained within the street sweeper. A mechanical broom sweeper can pick up large chunks of debris. A mechanical broom sweeper can "dig into" and remove hard packed dirt and mud. Mechanical sweepers are very efficient when picking up wet leaves, large aggregate particles, small limbs, smashed cans, etc. Dust control for this type of machine can be a problem because of the churning action of the brooms. The onboard street sweeper water spraying system(dust control) will generally mitigate dust when working in low debris areas.

A cutter-loader based on the plough principle and designed to cut coal which is too hard for the ordinary plough. Two vertical blades, fitted one at each end of the machine, carry cutting picks which shear the coal from the face by an oscillating motion. The machine is hauled backward and forward along the face by a chain haulage mounted on the tail end of the conveyor. The conveyor and slicer are held up to the coal by pneumatic rams spaced along the goaf side of the conveyor. The sheared coal is forced from the face by the wedge shape of the machine and is loaded on to the armoured conveyor by means of specially shaped ramps. The machine has been designed for seams with a minimum thickness of 4 ft and has a maximum cutting depth of 14 in.

Le rabot activé. La firme anglaise Huwood construit un rabot activé dont les pics, animés d'un mouvement de translation, frappent le massif à la manière de l'aiguille d'un marteau piqueur. The machine is employed in seams from 4 to 5 ft thick with a strong roof and floor.

La firme Mavor et Coulson construit une machine appelée Samson stripper qui abat le charbon par arrachement d'un copeau épais (environ 60 cm) chargé directement dans le convoyeur de taille. La machine est automotrice. Elle comprend un moteur qui entraîne une pompe à huile agissant sur une unité de propulsion. Celle-ci est formée d'un étançon vertical à double effet qui coince la machine entre mur et toit et d'un cylindre horizontal muni d'un piston également à double effet. Le piston horizontal porte, à chacune de ses extrémités, un coin d'attaque qui peut exercer sur le massif une pression de 42 t. La réaction est supportée par l'étançon vertical. La tête coupante peut ainsi pénétrer de 80 cm dans le massif. On desserre ensuite l'étançon de sorte que le bâti de la machine repose de tout son poids sur le mur et que l'unité de propulsion devient libre de glisser de 80 cm afin de se préparer à effectuer un nouveau cycle d'avancement.

The Miner System also includes two other major components. The first component is a series of smaller conveyors called "intermediate conveyors" which are arranged in sequence from the ore source. These conveyors, built to specification and available in lengths from 50 to 100 feet, pass the material in sequence to a shuttle belt conveyor which is located immediately before the Radial Stacking Conveyor. In this instance the carton blank is flat and side-seamed on the DPM. The lined carton is then discharged upright onto a conveyor leading to the filler and top closing machine.

In the production of filament non-wovens use can be made of yarn from a creel filled with spools of untwisted yarn, produced in a separate process, or of yarns spun and possibly drawn on the integrated non-woven machine. In the latter case a spun-bonded non-woven is produced. The drawn bundles of filaments are spread by air transport systems and laid down in layers on a conveyor belt. Thus an unbonded non-woven is formed, which is often held in place by suction through the conveyor belt. The non-woven is then bonded.

Nonwoven geotextiles made in a continuous line process, in which filaments are extruded, drawn, formed into loose web, and bonded, are called spunbonded. Some people have a tendency to restrict the use of the term spunbonded to the heatbonded nonwovens. This tendency is not justified. The term spunbonded implies that spinning (extruding and drawing) and bonding the filaments are made continuously .... Most of the nonwoven geotextiles made from filaments are spunbonded.

However, the rotary drum head machines are proving to be the more popular and look to be superseding the chain ripper models produced by Joy. In operation the chain ripper machine works as follows. The machine is trammed forward into position then, while the main chassis of the machine remains stationary, the cutting head moves forward, sumping into the coal at the bottom of the face. The rotation of the chains carries the broken coal back over the head and deposits it on to the chain conveyor which then moves the coal to the rear end of the machine. When the sumping operation is complete, the head travels upwards towards the top of the seam, breaking out the coal as it moves. As soon as the cycle is complete the head is withdrawn and swung to the side in order to make another cut.

Rapid plows. The Loebbehobel is a rapid plow which is equipped with three or four protruding picks or bits. The plow is double-ended and cuts as it traverses in each direction along the face. The machine normally travels at a speed of about 75 ft/min and takes a slice of coal 3-4 in. thick off the face at each pass. It is pulled to and fro by an endless chain which is driven by the gearheads at each end of the armored conveyor. Maximum pulling force is about 20 tons. This machine is capable of working in seams 1 ft 8 in. thick up to 7 ft thick and can produce, load, and deliver to a gate conveyor from 1. 5 to 5 tons/min. The plow works well in seams which are soft or are hard but friable but will not work well in coal which is "tough" or "woody".
