But the standard German "Pfund" is now 500 grams, i. e. half a kilogram.

Cependant, la résistance de son principal partenaire commercial, les États-Unis, à l'adoption du système métrique, ainsi que la résistance dans la population au nouveau système ont fait que le Canada vit toujours, en 2014, avec les deux systèmes, le Système international (SI) et le système impérial. A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a mechanism used to measure extremely weak signals, such as subtle changes in the human body’s electromagnetic energy field.

Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition : each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits(that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing.

Le magnétomètre à SQUID est un détecteur de champ magnétique très sensible et il s'impose depuis sa découverte comme le magnétomètre le plus sensible actuellement disponible. Il est basé sur un détecteur supraconducteur qui est nommé «SQUID» (superconducting quantum interference device : détecteur supraconducteur à interférence quantique). Il s'agit d'un anneau supraconducteur avec une ou deux zones normales de faibles épaisseur. Le principe de fonctionnement est basé sur l'effet tunnel des porteurs du courant supraconducteur (l'effet Josephson) soumis à un champ magnétique à travers ces zones normales (dites jonctions normales ou liaisons faibles). Cet anneau est un instrument très sensible pour la détection de très faibles changements de flux magnétiques. Il est possible de mesurer avec cet appareil des champs magnétiques d'une grandeur de 10e-10 Œrsted en utilisant des bobines de détection de taille macroscopique.

The radiation produced by X-ray tubes and by isotopes such as Iridium 192 and Cobalt 60 can look through welds to reveal discontinuities invisible to the human eye. The soundness of critical joints is laid bare on the radiographic film. The radiographs are a permanent record of weld quality.

When two electrical conductors are connected, an electrical resistance forms at the transition point between the two conductors. This resistance depends on the contact size and state of the surface. Since surfaces are never flat in microscopic measure, contact only takes place at the highest point. If one considers that the contact point is made by conductor metal on conductor metal, it is valid, as for all resistance, that the value is determined by specific resistance, the surface through which the current rate flows and the height of the "contact peaks. "The greater the amount of contact point surfaces there are, the lower the resulting resistance and consequently the greater is the capacity which the contact points can transmit. The conductors must be firmly pressed together so that the distance, the height of the "contact peaks" is as small as possible and the contact area as large as possible.

A form of advance support in loose ground for tunnels and workings.

Forepoles are driven from behind the permanent supports and into the loose ground and usually angled outwards. The method provides temporary protection to the miners at the face until space is available for erecting another set of permanent supports. Method for investigating atmospheric behaviour using pulsed light beams (lasers).

Light detection and ranging(lidar) is a technique in which a beam of light is used to make range-resolved remote measurements. A lidar [instrument] emits a beam of light, that interacts with the medium or object under study. Some of this light is scattered back toward the lidar. The backscattered light captured by the lidar's receiver is used to determine some property or properties of the medium in which the beam propagated or the object that caused the scattering. The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. The wavelength or wavelengths of the light used by a lidar depend on the type of measurements being made and may be anywhere from the infrared through the visible and into the ultraviolet. The different wavelengths used by radar and lidar lead to the very different forms that the actual instruments take. The major scientific use of lidar is for measuring properties of the earth's atmosphere, and the major commercial use of lidar is in aerial surveying and bathymetry(water depth measurement). Lidar is also used extensively in ocean research and has several military applications, including chemical and biological agent detection. Lidar can also be used to locate, identify, and measure the speed of vehicles. Hunters and golfers use lidar-equipped binoculars for range finding.

Air-wall ionization chambers typically consist of a closed air volume of several hundred cm³ from which a saturated ion current is measured using an electronic circuit. The walls are approximately air equivalent and made from plastic or aluminium. Falex lubricant test. The purpose of this test is to measure bearing loads and wear at constant speed and temperature. It consists of a ¼-in.-diameter pin rotating at(usually) 290 rpm between opposing V-blocks(jaws) on which the load is applied. The load is variable up to 5400 lb. Falex tests can also be made at 390 and 750 rpm. Wear is measured by a spring gauge micrometer through a ratchet type loader which compensates for wear at the rate of 0. 0000556 in. per tooth movement. The pin and V-blocks are submerged in the sample of oil during the test.

Satellite image. ... The most common is the infrared image which indicates the temperature of the cloud tops (or the land or sea in cloud free areas). Visible images are also used, but are only useful during daylight hours. Infrared images are most commonly used as they can be taken through night-time hours.

These images come from satellites which remain above a fixed point on the Earth(ie. they are "geostationary"). The infrared picture shows the same view but looking at a part of the spectrum which our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow us to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours.
