Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Rules of Court
  • Law of Contracts (common law)
CONT

This category of mistake is derived from a small group of cases most of them of modern times, although the doctrine existed at least as early as 1584. The general rule is that a man is estopped by his deed, and although there is no such estoppel in the case of ordinary signed documents, a party of full age and understanding is normally bound by his signature to a document, whether he reads or understands it or not. If, however, a party has been misled into executing a deed or signing a document essentially different from that which he intended to execute or sign, he can plead non est factum in an action against him. The deed or writing is completely void in whosesoever hands it may come.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Aerospace Medicine
OBS

Several different terminologies have been used to describe physiological acceleration. Since the terminology may be based either on the action of the accelerating vehicle or the reaction of the passenger, the terms used are often confusing to a reader without prior knowledge of the system of terminology used. Probably the most easily understood system is the eyeballs in, eyeballs out, eyeballs down, eyeballs up, etc., terminology used by test pilots, which refers to the sensations experienced by the person being accelerated. Thus, the acceleration experienced in an aircraft pullout or inside loop is eyeballs down. Note that, in the NASA vehicle(center of gravity displacement) terminology, this is-az acceleration. Some physiological-acceleration terminologies designate accelerations in terms of the equivalent displacement acceleration of the subject as if he were starting from rest. In such terminologies a man standing up or sitting down on the surface of the earth is experiencing 1 g of headward acceleration because of gravity. Other descriptive terms used in this way are footward, forward(the acceleration experienced by a man pressed into the seat back by an accelerating vehicle), rearward, leftward, rightward, spineward, sternumward, and tailward. One terminology based on reaction uses the terms head-to-foot(the acceleration generated by a pullout in an aircraft), chest-to-back, foot-to-head, and back-to-chest.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
DEF

A series of processes in which atmospheric sulfur dioxide is oxidized to the trioxide, which combines with water and is washed out on to the Earth's surface as sulfuric acid or sulfates; bacterial action converts the sulfates into hydrogen sulfide, which is then oxidized to sulfur dioxide. This mechanism maintains the global atmospheric concentration of sulfur dioxide at a roughly constant level, and it is important to ensure that the extra sulfur dioxide produced by man does not overload it, leading to steadily increasing concentration in the air.

Français

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
CONT

Fiche 11 1996-11-22

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Artificial Intelligence
CONT

The pool-sweep theory of intelligence. People who have large swimming pools often purchase a device called a pool-sweep, essentially a motorized float with long tentacles that sweep the bottom of a swimming pool. It has to be programmed to the shape of the pool, and then simply is left to do its work. When someone sees a pool-sweep in action for the first time, it looks very smart. It appears to go after the dirt and make its way around the pool as if it were being steered by a little man. It is indeed programmed in the sense that it has been given a set of instructions and it follows them. When we think of something as being programmed we imply that it is in some way intelligent, certainly more intelligent than something that hasn’t been programmed, or that cannot be programmed. People are fooled initially by the pool-sweep, and only see it for what it is after being told that it's just programmed for one pool, and if it were placed in a different pool it wouldn’t work. In a similar way, people can be fooled initially into thinking that computers are really smart of intelligent.
