The written scale describes the relation between map and Earth distances in words. For example, the statement “1 inch equals 1 mile” on a map means that one inch on the map represents one mile on Earth's surface.... the first number always refers to map distance, and the second to distance on Earth's surface.

A 1/250000 scale topographic map is considered to be a reconnaissance-type map. It covers the same area of land as sixteen 1/50000 scale maps. This scale is popular not only as a detailed overview of a large area, but also as a detailed road map for use when travelling on back roads and side roads. A full 1/250000 scale map shows an area approximately the size of Prince Edward Island.

The method of squares enables you to both transfer and enlarge [or reduce] a map at the same time. It is a combination process. If the squares of the transfer grid on the base map and those on the new map are the same size, the scales of both maps will be the same. Let us say they are quarter-inch squares.... But if we use a half-inch square on the new map instead, and keep the square on the base map still a quarter-inch, the new map will have squares whose sides are twice as big as those on the base map.... Likewise we can reduce the scale of the base map by reducing the size of the squares of the transfer grid on the new map.

The Global Assessment of Human Induced Soil Degradation(GLASOD) was conducted by the International Soil Reference and Information Centre(ISRIC) at Wageningen, The Netherlands, as commissioned by the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP). ISRIC produced a 1 : 10 million scale wall chart in 1990 and subsequently produced a digital data set. In essence, the GLASOD data base contains information on soil degradation within map units as reported by numerous soil experts around the world through a questionnaire. It includes the type, degree, extent, cause and rate of soil degradation.

Overview of resampling methods. From the perspective of space, a satellite camera or sensor takes images that provide unique Earth information at scales ranging from very small to very large. To better understand an image, its shape, scale and perspective often are changed by rectification, orthorectification or map projection to relate it to real world coordinates. During that process, however, gaps between pixels may form, requiring that images be resampled to fill in those missing pixels. There are basically 3 methods of resampling : nearest neighbor, bilinear interpolation and cubic convolution.

Templets used in connection with studies for the figure of the earth and isostasy. In obtaining elevation readings from maps in connection with topographic and isostatic reductions, templets of plastic are used. The templets used in connection with deflection of the vertical studies have circles and radial lines drawn upon them, so proportioned with reference to scale of map and azimuth that elevations and ocean depths within each compartment formed by adjacent arcs and radii can be easily averaged and the effect of the mass therein on a plumb line at the station(center of circles), under various hypotheses, can be computed. The templets used in connection with gravity studies are similar to those described above, except that no account is taken of azimuth, all compartments bounded by a given pair of circles being of the same size and shape. A given templet can be used only on maps of the scale and projection for which it is constructed.

The most useful part of it is the top right corner, which has 1 : 50, 000 scale map gradations(divisions of a grid square) marked along and down it, counting backwards from the corner. When you place the correct numbered marks on the grid lines of the map, the corner of the romer shows the point the map reference refers to. This is essential for accurate plotting of 6 and 8 figure map references. Most romers have a hole in them; it's a good idea to loop a piece of string through it and hang it round your neck so you don’t lose it under the seat.
