A territory that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1898 as the "Yukon Territory", out of the District of Yukon created in 1895 in the Northwest Territories. Until 1999, the Yukon used to stand eleventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, before the Northwest Territories even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years before. It now stands twelfth, after the Northwest Territories and before Nunavut. On March 27, 2002, the name was changed to "Yukon" even if the status of territory remains.

The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Yukon" (or "territory of Yukon") for the geographical entity, "Yukon" for the provincial administration or as the short form, and "Yk." as the abbreviation to be officially recognized by the toponymic authority, a change from the previous "Y.T.".

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is YT (or CA-YT), [to be changed to YK (or CA-YK) if a request to that extent is made and accepted]. This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character territorial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign.

The use of the definite article in English before "Yukon" is dependent upon how it is used in the context. If "Yukon" modifies another term, then the article is omitted. e.g. Yukon Indians comprise 25% of the population of the territory. If "Yukon" takes the inflected genitive (’s) , then the use of the article is optional. e.g. (the) Yukon’s wildlife resources; (the) Yukon’s native people. In every other case, the use of the definite article would be in keeping with common usage as it signals the absence of a generic geographic feature. Hence we say "the Mediterranean" (implied: Sea), "the Philippines" (implied: "Islands"). Currently, there is some debate as to the appropriateness of the definite article, all the more since "the Yukon" (implied: "territory") is seeking political parity with the other established "provinces" (statement of 1991). [Usage can thus tend to drop the article as is the case before the name of a province.]

World Tuberculosis Day, falling on 24 March each year, is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of several million people each year, mostly in the third world. 24 March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch's discovery opened the way toward diagnosing and curing tuberculosis.

The Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales, CNES(French Space Agency) took a spectacular picture of the European ERS-1 satellite via SPOT 4, the most recent optical observation satellite in the SPOT family, which was launched on 24 March 1998.... From its orbit at an altitude of 820 km, SPOT 4 is able to pick out details of 10 metres on the Earth's surface, which is moving at a speed of 24, 000 km per hour. The ERS-1 orbit is 41 km below that of SPOT, which means that the latter can distinguish details of 50 cm in size on ERS-1. However, since ERS-1 flies much lower it flies faster than SPOT 4 and overtakes it with a relative velocity of about 250 km/h.

One of the problems recognized by the Hoover Commission was the necessity for the Secretary of State or the Under Secretary to attend numerous international conferences requiring long continued absences from the Department. For example, Secretary Byrnes spent 350 out of his 562 days as Secretary of State in international conferences. To remedy this situation there was created on March 2, 1949, the Office of Ambassador-at-Large who could assist the Secretary in important international negotiations as well as attend important conferences abroad when an experienced representative of high rank was required.

Using different instruments to measure the same phenomena from dissimilar views, the project explored the role of mesoscale eddy motions in the dynamics of general oceanic circulation. A Joint Monitoring Program(JMP) was established precisely to determine whether or not CEAA [Canadian Environmental Assessment Act] was exerting negative impacts on competitiveness. Undertaken jointly by the CEA Agency [Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency] and Industry Canada, with the participation of Natural Resources Canada, this one-year program was designed to collect comments on any problems encountered by proponents; to carry out a competitiveness study to establish the actual cost of the environmental assessment process to proponents; and to document the benefits of the process to both environmental protection and the promotion of environmental technologies. Launched on 1 April 1995, the JMP was terminated on 31 March 1996.

Le Programme conjoint de surveillance (PCS) de l'ACEE [Agence canadienne d'évaluation environnementale] et d'Industrie Canada (avec la participation de Ressources naturelles Canada) a précisément été conçu pour déterminer si la LCEE [Loi canadienne sur l'évaluation environnementale] avait une influence néfaste sur la compétitivité des entreprises canadiennes. Il s'agit d'un programme d'un an, qui avait pour objectif de recueillir des commentaires sur tous les problèmes constatés par les promoteurs, de mener une étude sur la compétitivité permettant d'établir le coût réel du processus d'évaluation environnementale pour les promoteurs et enfin de calculer les avantages du processus, tant pour la protection de l'environnement que pour la promotion des technologies vertes. Le PCS a été lancé le 1er avril 1995 et il a pris fin le 31 mars 1996.

Park is open year-round and the Rogers Pass Information Centre is open 5 days a week. There are 2 campgrounds in the park containing 77 campsites. Glacier also has some designated backcountry camping areas as well as areas where random camping is allowed. Backcountry campers are not required to register, however there is a voluntary registration program. Visitors should check with the park in advance of their trip to find out what services are provided. Visitors overnighting in the backcountry are required to purchase Wilderness Passes(based on the number of nights stayed), this in addition to a daily park pass. The Rogers Pass Information Centre is the main interpretive and general information centre for Glacier National Park. The Rogers Pass Information Centre is located in the heart of the park. It is 70 kms east of Revelstoke, B. C. and 80 kms west of Golden, B. C. The Centre is open daily, mid-May through September and December through March, the remainder of the year the Centre is open 5 days a week.
