Forecast Models: Forecasters use numerical weather models to make their forecasts. These numerical models are classified into four main classes. The first is global models, which focus on the entire northern hemisphere. The second is national models, which focus on the USA. The third is regional models. The final class of models is relocatable models, which do not focus on any permanent geographical location. The Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay(ASDAR) programme is sponsored by an International meteorological group in order to augment the collection of upper air meteorological data, and thereby improve the accuracy of global weather forescasting. It has been developed by Matra Marconi Space, UK in collaboration with the WMO to enable aircraft to generate and transmit real-time meteorological reports via geostationary meteorological satellites for global relay. It is an automated system offering significant advantages, including reduced crew responsibility delays and errors. ASDAR, operating in conjunction with meteorological satellites, has proved to be a versatile tool in obtaining meteorological data automatically from flights over both oceans and continents, especially over areas not serviced by meteorological stations. In addition, during the ascent and descent phases of the aircraft, observations at regular pressure intervals provide a detailed vertical atmospheric temperature profile near the airports. The meteorological data provided by this system has proved to be very useful for improving the weather forecasting service.

A type of pressure-tube anemometer, named after the inventor, in which the pressure head is located on the windward end of the wind vane so that it is kept facing into the wind.

The Dines Pressure Tube Anemometer is universally recognised as the most reliable and accurate instrument of its kind and has been adopted as standard by the British Meteorological Office and by meteorological stations world-wide. Dines Pressure Tube Anemometer consists essentially of a Head Assembly, a Velocity Recorder and a Direction Recorder, the IM100 records wind speed and wind direction simultaneously on a single chart. An important feature of the Dines, is that it records not only average wind velocity over a given time, but also variations in wind force, with the strength and frequency of gusts, providing valuable data on the internal structure of the wind.

The suction head is mounted concentrically with the shaft, near the bearing that supports the vane, and develops a suction that is independent of wind direction. The pressure difference between the suction head and the pressure head is proportional to the square root of the wind speed and is measured by a specially designed float manometer with a linear wind scale.

The Dines anemometer was first described by William Henry Dines in 1892 and had all the essentials of the final form of the pressure-tube anemometer. With various modifications, the Dines anemometer remained a useful wind measuring device into the 1960s.

The fluxes between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere are usually called surface fluxes. Many processes are involved such as evaporation from land and sea, warming and cooling of the earth, emission and deposition of gases and particles. The ozone fields are generated with the operational data assimilation system TM3-DAM, which is driven by the meteorological fields(wind, surface pressure, temperature) from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF).

While weather elements, such as temperature and pressure, are observed only at particular locations, we can assume that these elements are continuously distributed in the horizontal direction. Such a distribution is called a meteorological field; in other words, for any latitude and longitude, some value of that variable exists without any voids or discontinuities.

The joint IAEA/WMO Atmospheric Transport Model Evaluation Study(ATMES) was intiated in November 1986. The objective of ATMES was to compare the evaluation of the radioactive cloud and with the evaluation predicted by mathematical models for atmospheric dispersion, using as input only the estimated source term and the meteorological data for the days following the Chernobyl accident.
