... of the World Meteorological Organization. The Global Climate Observing System was established in 1992 by four international organizations : the World Meteorological Organization(WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission(IOC) of UNESCO, the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP), and the International Council of Scientific Unions(ICSU). The objectives of the Global Climate Observing System(GCOS) are to insure the acquisition of data to meet the data for : climate system monitoring, climate change detection and response monitoring especially in terrestrial ecosystems, application of climate information to national economic development, research toward improved understanding, modelling, and prediction of the climate system. 2, fiche 3, Anglais, - Global%20Climate%20Observing%20System

NCDC' s mission is to manage the Nations's resource of global climatological in-situ and remotely sensed data and information to promote global environmental stewardship; to describe, monitor and assess the climate; and to support efforts to predict changes in the Earth's environment. This effort requires the acquisition, quality control, processing, summarization, dissemination, and preservation of a vast array of climatological data generated by the national and international meteorological services. NCDC' s mission is global in nature and provides the U. S. climate representative to the World Meteorological Organization, the World Data Center System, and other international scientific programs.
