This simple experiment with a mirror illustrates one aspect of visual awareness. It relies on a phenomenon called binocular rivalry, which occurs when each eye has a different input from the same part of the visual field. Motion in the field of one eye can cause either the entire image or parts of the image to be erased. The movement captures the brain's attention.

The spot film or photospot camera is positioned after a semitransparent mirror used as a light splitter which shunts about 15% of the light output of the image intensifier to a television camera. The rest of the light output is directed to the photospot camera or cine camera. This truss segment, called "S5", is a mirror image of the P5 truss segment that arrived for processing at Kennedy Space Center in July 2001. The S5 truss segment is a 10-1/2-by-15-foot aluminum structure that will weigh 3, 900 pounds when fully processed. The truss segment will attach to the starboard side of the S4 truss and will be the tenth truss attached to the ISS [International Space Station] as part of a total 11-truss, girder-like structure that will ultimately extend the length of a football field.

An unofficial numismatic term used to describe the reflective fields of proofs and prooflikes. Mirror depth can be measured by holding printed matter in front of a coin and increasing the distance between the two. If the printing is reflected in the field but is not clear at a distance of under one inch, the coin is semi-prooflike; if clearly reflected, that is readable, at a distance of one to four inches, the coin is prooflike and has a deep mirror; similarly at four to eight inches, it is very deep, and ultra deep beyond eight inches.
