Twin lens reflex cameras have two lenses... The upper or "viewing" lens reflects off a fixed mirror and forms an image on a ground glass screen on top of the camera. The lower lens is the one which takes the photograph, and is fitted with a shutter and diaphragm. To use... look down onto the focusing screen to see what you are photographing. Turning the focusing knob moves both lenses backwards and forwards, so when your subject is sharply imaged on the ground glass the taking lens is also focused to give a sharp image on film.

Ten meters in diameter, the mirror is composed of 36 hexagonal segments that work in concert as a single piece of reflective glass.

The primary mirror is located at the lower end of the telescope tube in a reflector and has its front surface coated with an extremely thin film of metal, such as aluminum. The back of the mirror is usually made of glass, although other materials have been used from time to time. Pyrex(trademark) was the principal glass of choice for many of the older large telescopes, but new technology has led to the development and widespread use of a number of glasses with very low coefficients of expansion.

Nephoscope in which the image of the clouds produced by a mirror is observed.

The mirror nephoscope consists essentially of a horizontal disk of black glass engraved with concentric circles. A vertical pointer adjustable to various known heights is mounted on the rim of the instrument. The pointer is so placed by the observer that the image of the cloud under observation is in line with the pointer and the centre of the disk. The image is kept in line with the pointer as it moves, and the direction of motion is read off from a scale on the rim of the circle. Another type of mirror nephoscope has a mirror on which the only marking is a centre point.

[Hubble Space Telescope's wide-field planetary camera] That camera now will be fitted with the corrective mirrors as well. The mirrors act, in effect, like high-tech eyeglasses. A construction method for a large mirror in which the back is hollowed-out to leave a ribbed structure that resembles a honeycomb.

We report on the casting of the first 8. 4 meter diameter borosilicate honeycomb mirror at the Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory. This blank will become the world's largest monolithic glass telescope mirror, and is the first of two mirrors for the Large Binocular Telescope Project. The honeycomb 8. 4 meter mirror was cast from 21 tons of E6 borosilicate glass manufactured by Ohara. This glass is melted into a mold constructed of aluminosilicate fiber to produce a honeycomb structure with roughly 20% of solid density. The 1662 hexagonal voids that form the honeycomb structure are produced by ceramic fiber boxes bolted to the bottom of the mold with SiC bolts. The furnace rotates at 6. 8 rpm during the casting process to produce the F/1. 14 paraboloid on the front surface. This shaping minimizes the amount of glass which must be removed during the grinding process. The front faceplate of the mirror will be 28 mm thick after generating and the back faceplate will be 25 mm. The overall thickness of the finished honeycomb blank is 89 cm at the outer edge and 44 cm at the central hole.

Les premiers «grands» miroirs ont été coulés pour le MMT (ex Multi Mirror Telescope), puis pour les deux télescopes Magellan de 6.50m, et en ce moment, pour le premier des deux miroirs de 8,4m du LBT (Large Binocular Telescope).

This operation called for setting up an auxiliary cast iron grinding wheel to operate against the periphery of the turntable of the main machine. Ring laser gyro... The mechanical structure integrity of the gyro is based on a 1. 2 X1. 2 meter block of zerodur. The zerodur is a glass ceramic material with a thickness of 180 mm weighing approximately 600 kg. The block has four 1-meter longitudinal bores provided for the laser beam paths. Folding mirrors are mounted at each of the four corners of the block. This forms a closed square resonator in which the laser beams can travel in both directions. The block was produced by Zeiss Glaswerke of Mainz, Germany. At Zeiss the machining process included cutting the gyro body edges in preparation for the mounting of the folding mirrors. The surfaces for the mirror mounting are optically polished allowing the folding mirrors to be attached directly to the zerodur by optical contact rather than by bonding.

Photographie en couleurs basée sur l'enregistrement de motifs interférentiels à l'intérieur de la couche photographique. L'exposition s'effectue à travers la base et la lumière chemine à partir d'un miroir qui est en relation optique avec la surface de l'émulsion.

OBS

Après le traitement, les cristaux argentiques reposent dans les régions correspondant aux interférences et lorsque le phototype est bien visionné, il est possible d'y décerner une simulation chromogène de la scène. Ce procédé s'appelle également photographie interférentielle.
