Si la source lumineuse est sensiblement un point au foyer du paraboloïde, le faisceau réfléchi est un faisceau cylindrique. Les réflecteurs de phares de marine ou d'automobiles sont souvent des miroirs paraboliques. Le miroir parabolique étant stigmatique pour le point à l'infini (son image est au foyer du paraboloïde), on l'utilise comme objectif dans certains télescopes.

The primary mirror is located at the lower end of the telescope tube in a reflector and has its front surface coated with an extremely thin film of metal, such as aluminum. The back of the mirror is usually made of glass, although other materials have been used from time to time. Pyrex(trademark) was the principal glass of choice for many of the older large telescopes, but new technology has led to the development and widespread use of a number of glasses with very low coefficients of expansion.

A construction method for a large mirror in which the back is hollowed-out to leave a ribbed structure that resembles a honeycomb.

We report on the casting of the first 8. 4 meter diameter borosilicate honeycomb mirror at the Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory. This blank will become the world's largest monolithic glass telescope mirror, and is the first of two mirrors for the Large Binocular Telescope Project. The honeycomb 8. 4 meter mirror was cast from 21 tons of E6 borosilicate glass manufactured by Ohara. This glass is melted into a mold constructed of aluminosilicate fiber to produce a honeycomb structure with roughly 20% of solid density. The 1662 hexagonal voids that form the honeycomb structure are produced by ceramic fiber boxes bolted to the bottom of the mold with SiC bolts. The furnace rotates at 6. 8 rpm during the casting process to produce the F/1. 14 paraboloid on the front surface. This shaping minimizes the amount of glass which must be removed during the grinding process. The front faceplate of the mirror will be 28 mm thick after generating and the back faceplate will be 25 mm. The overall thickness of the finished honeycomb blank is 89 cm at the outer edge and 44 cm at the central hole.

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia : Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0. 40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit.

The "frost" or "frosting" is a matte type surface on the devices of a cameo coin and can range in appearance from white to gray(less white) to silver(no white). The fields of a cameo coin can range from "black"(deep mirror) to silver-appearing(semi-prooflike). The degree of contrast can be subdivided into degrees as "slight", "excellent", and "outstanding". An outstanding contrast is also known as "black and white".
