Controlled pore support prepared by heating borosilicate glass to 500-700 °C, when it undergoes a phase separation. Subsequent leaching of the borate component leaves a porous support with closely controlled pore sizes. However, it is not suitable for industrial purposes owing to its high price and lack of stability due to the continuous leaching of silica from the particles during prolonged usage in continuous flow systems, especially in alkaline media. Various methods have been employed to overcome the stability problem including the deposition of a surface coating of zirconium oxide by impregnating the controlled pore glass with a zirconium salt under vacuum followed by calcination to the oxide.

Studies have been carried out on matrix stability and effects of coupling methodology on inorganic supports. Significant differences in controlled pore glass via azo-linkage and Schiff’s base linkage, Schiff’s base being the most stable. Similarly, many immobilized enzymes show increased stability to proteolysis. The Tungum alloy is an alpha-brass of British origins. It has a passive oxide layer, which on exposure to reagents develops a very thin oxide coating. Tungum resists both stress and crevice corrosion in marine environments/atmospheres. This offers excellent service-life, even at intermittent duty in the highly corrosive 'splash’ zone. Tungum is non-magnetic and has non-sparking(electrostatic discharge) properties. This allows Tungum to be used in high pressure gas pipework systems(oxygen & inert gases). Uncommon among copper alloys, Tungum alloy can be precipitation hardened using heat treatment techniques. This enables its physical properties to be modified as required to suit various applications. Tungum alloy can be used for low temperature(cryogenic) applications.

The laser-engraved anilox roll, introduced about 20 years ago, consists of a plasma-sprayed ceramic coating(typically chromium oxide) that is ground and honed to a very smooth finish(in the neighborhood of 5 RMS). The ceramic coating is extremely hard, with a micro-hardness of 1150 to 1300 Vickers.(For comparison, the hardness of chrome plating is around 850 to 950 Vickers.) Hardness is widely used as a guide to strength, wear and erosion resistance of a coating. Due to its extreme hardness, it is not possible to engrave these coatings using a knurling tool. The only way to produce cells in this material is to engrave it with a laser.

The process in which a material, or an assembly of small, discrete units, is coated with, or embedded in, a molten film, sheath, or foam, usually of an elastomer. A foam-forming plastic may be used to fill the spaces between various electrical or electronic components so that they are embedded in and supported by the foam. Plastics and other materials used for this purpose are often called potting compounds. A specialized use of this technique is growing crystals for semiconductors, in which a coating of liquid boric oxide is the encapsulating agent.
