Perforation fond-de-trou. Les exigences croissantes de rendement dans le forage en gradins conduisent à l'emploi de plus en plus répandu des grands diamètres de forage. La foration percutante classique est pratiquement limitée à un diamètre d'environ 4" (...) mais les marteaux fond-de-trou permettent d'obtenir des diamètres beaucoup plus grands. Un marteau fond-de-trou permet également de forer des trous plus droits qu'un marteau hors-trou, même dans des roches fissurées ou endommagées.

A drilling tool for cutting through rock.

In rotary drilling ... there are two basic types of bit. The rolling-cutter bit shears, chips or grinds the rock as the drill string is rotated; the drag bit and the diamond bit scrape or grind.

There are three principal kinds of bits used in rotary drilling: roller-cone bits (rock bits), diamond bits, and fishtail bits (drag bits).

The percussion method of drilling, whereby a heavy bit makes hole by a pounding action.

Cable-tool drilling consists in pulverizing the rock formation a little at a time by alternately raising and dropping a heavy cutting tool called a bit, thereby driving a hole into the earth. Water must be present in the bottom of the hole to keep the rock fragments in suspension, and from time to time the excess water and rock particles must be bailed out.

Early wells were drilled with impact-type tools, in a method called cable-tool drilling, in which a chisel-like bit was suspended from a cable to a lever at the surface, and an up-and-down motion of the lever caused the bit to pound the bottom of the hole and chip away the rock. Such drilling had to be interrupted periodically to allow loose rock chips to be removed with a basket-like device.

It has largely been replaced by rotary drilling.

Le forage au battage consiste à désagréger la roche en faisant tomber de quelques centimètres de hauteur, à une cadence assez rapide, un instrument lourd et tranchant. Les déblais sont ensuite recueillis au moyen d'une cuiller, après injection d'une petite quantité d'eau au fond du puits.

[...] le forage par battage fut employé jusque vers 1922; ce type de forage consistait à attaquer la roche au moyen d'un trépan [...] animé d'un mouvement alternatif vertical qui assurait le creusement du trou.

Les termes «forage au câble», «forage par battage» et «système de forage par battage» portent la mention CORRECT puisqu'ils représentent des formes abrégées du syntagme «système de forage par battage au câble» dûment attesté dans UNIVE (Encyclopaedia Universalis). Nous attribuons également la mention CORRECT aux termes «sondage au câble» et «sondage par battage» puisqu'ils sont construits sur les modèles «forage au câble» et «forage par battage». Toutefois, nous recommandons que ces termes soient utilisés dans le domaine minier puisque le Dictionnaire de géologie de A. Foucault et J.-F. Raoult [source FOUGE, 1984, p. 132] et le Dictionnaire du pétrole de Yves Barbier [source BARPE, 1981, p.78] signalent que le terme sondage s'applique à la reconnaissance du sous-sol.

Down-hole percussive drills ... consist primarily of a string of drill rods attached to a percussion drill bit at the bottom of the hole. However, instead of the mechanical energy being transmitted to the bit from the surface of the hole via the entire string of rods, the power unit is located "down the hole" immediately above the bit, thus eliminating energy loss through friction of the drill string against the shaft walls and through the threaded connections of the drill rods.

In 1952 the first down-the-hole percussion drill... designed by Andre Stenuick, with a drilling diameter of 10 cm(4 in) was produced in Belgium.

Les marteaux fond de trou. Les marteaux-perforateurs classiques transmettent l'énergie de destruction de la roche par l'intermédiaire du train de tige. D'où des pertes d'énergie non négligeables dues à l'élasticité de ce train de tige et à son poids lorsque la foration se fait en montant. Parfois il y a des déviations importantes du trou foré. Une solution très originale est parfois employée. Le marteau cylindrique est descendu dans le trou et assure ainsi une frappe directe, d'autant plus efficace que la pression d'air comprimé est plus importante. L'air comprimé est amené au marteau par le train de tige lui-même qui assurera par ailleurs la rotation de l'ensemble : marteau + taillant.
