PILLAR ROCK [7 fiches]

Fiche 1 2016-02-26

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Mining Dangers and Mine Safety
  • Underground Mining
DEF

The sudden failure of walls or pillars in a mine caused by the weight or pressure of the surrounding rocks, and accompanied by a violent release of energy.

CONT

Rock bursts. In areas of very deep mining, as additional weight is supported by the pillars on the coal face, stresses may so build up that the yield point is reached. If the coal pillars, the roof, or the floor are able to yield gradually, the effects of the stresses are relieved by floor heaving, or by pillar or roof failure. Where the coal or the associated rocks are particularly strong and depths are much above average, these stresses may be relieved by rock bursts, which are relatively violent outbursts of the coal into the rooms and entries. Frequently, a large volume of gas(usually methane) is suddenly released during a rock burst in a coal mine.

OBS

for "coal burst" : Rock bursts and "coal bursts" in coal mines are generally designated by the term "bumps" or "bounces". A large proportion of these "bumps" or "bounces" are actually "coal bursts" due to fracturing of pillars and remnants and need not involve any fracturing of roof or floor rock.

OBS

for "air blast" : In former years rock bursts were sometimes referred to as "air blasts". This name originated from the fact that large quantities of rock loosened by some of the larger rock bursts displaced quantities of air, with the result that a blast of air passed through the mine workings.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
CONT

OPG [Ontario Power Generation] indicated that changes in ground stress, induced by surface glacial loads through the earliest two glacial ice ages during the initial 150, 000 year period following decommissioning, would not affect pillar stability. Beyond 300, 000 years after decommissioning, OPG expected that the effects of several ice ages would cause significant rock failure and roof collapse within repository rooms.

DEF

A column, cone, pinnacle or mushroom-shaped pillar of ice rising above the surface of a glacier or other ice-covered area and protected from the sun's rays by on overlying rock or mass of debris, so that the surrounding ice ablates more rapidly than the column itself.

  • Petrography
DEF

A tablelike rock mass formed by wind abrasion or differential weathering in an arid region, consisting of an upper layer of resistant rock underlain by a softer, partially eroded layer, thereby forming a thin "stem" supporting a wide mass of rock, the whole feature resembling a mushroom in shape.

Subject field(s)
  • Mine Passages
CONT

Primary stopes are backfilled with cemented rock fill produced by spraying a cement-fly ash slurry on the rockfill before it is distributed to the stopes. The cemented rockfill hardens into a solid mass forming an artificial pillar for mining the secondary stope. The cement slurry is generally not required when secondary stopes are backfilled, except for the last pours to establish a firm mucking floor.

OBS

rock filling: Waste rock, used to fill up worked-out stopes to support the roof.

CONT

The principle of movable shield support is well known : once the working place has been fixed within the bounds of a pillar the production face is pushed forward together with the installed support without any further expenditure of time and money for setting up a new one; the weight of the support and the rock pressure are used for shifting the support.

Subject field(s)
  • Extraction Procedures - Various (Mining)
OBS

[In] base metal mines(...) a large proportion of the ore reserves is found in pillars left between previously mined stopes. These pillars are usually mined using the undercut-and-fill method which is especially suited to unstable ground conditions. Starting at the top of the mining zone the ore is removed in horizontal slices and replaced by backfill to sustain the walls of the adjacent stopes. A wooden mat braced by posts is used to support the backfill so that the ore underneath can be removed.(...) In one mine, the conventional undercut-and-fill technique was modified by suspending the wooden mat on rock bolts anchored to the crown pillar, rather than supporting it on posts.
