The HDD construction method is used to install pipelines beneath obstacles-such as stream crossings, lakes, coastal bluffs and road or railroad crossings where conventional open trench pipe construction techniques would cause unacceptable environmental disturbance or resource impacts. Using the continuous bore hole method, a HDD tunnels beneath surface obstacles and then pulls pipeline back through the underground tunnel, leaving the surface undisturbed. ... A tool that is designed to measure the amount of stretch in a string of stuck pipe and to indicate the deepest point at which the pipe is free.

The free-point indicator is lowered into the well on a conducting cable. Each end of a strain-gauge element is anchored to the pipe wall by friction springs or magnets, and, as strain is put on the pipe, a very accurate measurement of its stretch is transmitted to the surface. When a downhole motor is used, it is attached to the lower end of the drill string; then the bit is attached to the bottom end of the downhole motor. The drilling motor rotates the bit, rather than the bit being rotated by the drill pipe string.

There are two types of turbodrill or down-hole mud motor: the turbine, of which there are about six successful types, and the Dynadrill, a Moyno pump operating in reverse, consisting of a spiral shaft contained within a rubber sleeve. ...
