The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002...

Vers 1831, l'immigration massive permet aux habitants d'origine britannique de devenir majoritaire, mais, à compter de l'époque de la Confédération en 1867, la population francophone redevient supérieure à la population anglophone, la ville devenant le centre de l'expression de la culture française en Amérique. Érigée en municipalité en 1832, elle prend des dimensions imposantes à la faveur de 35 fusions de villes réalisées au fil des ans. Si, Toronto lui ravit le titre de «Capitale des affaires» à la fin du XXe siècle, elle conserve celui de «Métropole du Canada» et de «Ville aux cent clochers». En 1996, la région métropolitaine comprend environ 111 municipalités, celles occupant l'île de Montréal, l'île Jésus et l'île Bizard de l'archipel d'Hochelaga, et, sur la Rive-Sud, la ville de Longueuil [...]

Omphalocele(exomphalos) is a developmental defect of the anterior abdominal wall in which the abdominal musculature, fascia, and skin are absent in the midline at the point of insertion of the umbilical cord. Abdominal organs extrude anteriorly through the defect and are covered by a saclike membrane consisting of amnion externally and parietal peritoneum internally. Omphalocele results from failure of the intestine to return to the body cavity after its normal herniation into the umbilical stalk during embryonic life. Omphaloceles vary in size; the defect may be a few centimeters in diameter, or most of the anterior abdominal wall may be lacking. Depending on the size of the defect, small intestine, liver, spleen, and pancreas may be in the sac.

The Alpine Skiing World Cup is a circuit of alpine skiing competitions regulated by the FIS. Held at ski resorts across Europe, the continental US, and Canada, competitors compete to achieve the best time in four disciplines : Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G, and Downhill. After every race, points are awarded to the top 30 athletes-The athlete with the most points at the end of the season wins the cup. Sub-prizes are also awarded for athletes with the most point totals in each individual race discipline. The World Cup is held every year, and is considered the premier competition for alpine ski racing after the tetrannual Winter Olympics. Many consider the World Cup to be a more valuable title than the Olympics or the biannual World Championships, since it requires a competitor to ski at an extremely high level in several disciplines throughout the season(and not just in one race).

Contrairement aux Jeux Olympiques d'hiver ou aux Championnats du monde de ski alpin qui couronnent leurs vainqueurs sur une seule course, la Coupe du monde de ski alpin consiste à additionner des points tout au long de la saison hivernale. Elle est organisée par la FIS et a lieu chaque année. La majorité des courses ont lieu en Europe, des épreuves ont aussi lieu sur le continent nord-américain et asiatique. Il est arrivé de voir des courses organisées en Argentine ou en Australie. La première saison a été disputée pendant l'hiver en 1966/1967. Les cinq disciplines du ski alpin sont représentées en nombre égal de course. Les 30 concurrents les plus rapides se voient attribuer des points. Le vainqueur du classement général de la coupe du monde ainsi que ceux de chaque discipline reçoivent un globe de cristal.

... blue moon... For half a century, it's been known as the second full moon in a month... But that's wrong... The magazine [Sky & Telescope] incorrectly defined the term 53 years ago. James Hugh Pruett wrote a 1946 piece for the magazine after apparently misinterpreting a complex 1937 article in the Maine Farmer's Almanac that essentially, but not clearly, said a blue moon occurs when a season has four full moons, rather than the usual three. Pruett mistakenly thought it meant having a second full moon within the same month. Pruett's mistake went unnoticed for decades.... Although Sky & Telescope's editors think Pruett's mistake led to the popular modern mis-definition of "blue moon, "it's unclear where the Maine Farmer's Almanac came up with the rule. The almanac is defunct. Pruett died in 1955.... By either definition--Pruett's or the almanac' s--blue moons occur about every two or three years... Although purists may subscribe to the almanac' s point of view, Sinnott thinks Pruett's error will prevail.

After the gold rush, Whitehorse's population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route(a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N. W. T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining(copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station (ISS); in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair (submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous (e.g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments: critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy(BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization(BCAT-3-SC) and critical point(BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT-3 and 4 : Critical Point(BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4 : Polydisperse(BCAT-4-Poly).... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3(BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles(tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes : critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization.

Australia and New Zealand commemorate the ANZAC Day public holiday on April 25 every year to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps(ANZAC), and of all those who served their country. ANZAC Day is also a public holiday in Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga. The ANZAC tradition began in World War I with a landing on 25 April, 1915 near Gallipoli on the Turkish Aegean coast. Because of a navigational error, the ANZACs came ashore about a mile north of the intended landing point. Instead of facing the expected beach and gentle slope they found themselves at the bottom of steep cliffs, offering the few Turkish defenders an ideal defensive position. Establishing a foothold, the Anzacs found an advance to be impossible. After eight months of stalemate the Allies withdrew, leaving 10, 000 dead amongst the ANZACs and over 33, 000 British dead.

Marine biofilm : how quickly does it form? Immediately, when a surface is immersed in the sea, a conditioning film of organic molecules forms. This begins after a few seconds of immersion and is considered as molecular fouling. In the hours and days that follow, bacteria colonise the surface and micro colonies occur. These colonies spread outwards and upwards to form irregular structures. At this stage other microfouling appear, e. g. microalgae and fungi... The biofilm then matures and new species enter and grow, organic and inorganic debris is incorporated and solute gradients develop leading to a special heterogeneity. At this point three things can occur : The biofilm may slough off due the hydrodynamics of the environment; Organisms may begin to graze on the biofilm; Larger organisms such as algae and molluscs may establish on it, this is macrofouling.
