On peut voir de tels rayons surtout quand l'atmosphère contient assez de particules de poussière ou de brume de sorte que la lumière solaire des régions sans ombre est diffusée directement vers l'observateur. En réalité, ces rayons sont parallèles, mais à cause de l'effet de parallaxe, on dirait qu'ils convergent vers le soleil. Cet effet rappelle les rails d'un chemin de fer qui semblent converger quand on les regarde au loin.
