The set point theory [is] arguably the most influential and debated theory of body weight control. It suggests that like temperature in a room controlled by a thermostat, body weight(or body fat) is controlled by an equivalent device(ponderostat, adipostat) residing in the hypothalamus. Borrowing from the engineering vocabulary, this device receives feedback input from the controlled parameter(room temperature, body weight or body fat), and generates an error signal in a comparator if this feedback signal is deviating from a preset reference value(set point). The error signal is used to turn up or down any mechanisms that determine the level of the controlled parameter(heat production or dissipation in the case of room temperature, metabolizable energy-in or energy lost in the case of body weight/adiposity).

[The] "cryo arms" support the upper umbilicals which supply the Ariane 6 upper stage with cryogenic top-up fuel, maintain the correct pressurisation of the upper stage tanks, cool the engines before ignition and generally keep the upper stage in an optimal condition right up to the point of liftoff. The same umbilicals allow the fuel to be drained safely if a launch is aborted. Each arm is 13 m [meters] long and weighs 20 tonnes. One arm supplies liquid hydrogen at-250 ºC, the other supplies liquid oxygen at-180 ºC. When Ariane 6 lifts off, these arms will disconnect from the rocket and then pivot away quickly in just 2. 6 seconds to avoid interfering with the rocket's ascent.

... channeling is a problem specific to pool sand filters. When the sand(or crushed glass) media captures enough material that changes its physical properties, [the] sand's ability to screen particles out of water is reduced. It creates uneven pressure spots where water is trying to force its way through the media. Eventually, these uneven pressure spots in the filter can form an opening, called a channel. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact.

A line of rescuers, formed along a contour and facing uphill, organized to probe the snow with poles to locate an avalanche victim.

CONT

A probe line is a coordinated and systematic three-dimensional group search for a victim of an avalanche. The patterns differ for coarse probing, fine probing, and vehicle probing. Working a probe line is slow and tedious: It is close to the last resort when a visual search of the surface, a transceiver search, spot probing, and dog searches have been unsuccessful.

CONT

Spot-probe... any small, likely deposits. Repeat, until you are confident the buried person is not in these areas. If spot-probing is unsuccessful, set up a line of probers, again considering the last seen point and estimated trajectory.

La vague de sondage doit être limitée en nombre afin de permettre un contrôle réellement efficace par le chef de vague (15 à 20 sondeurs). [...] Les personnes sont alignées «épaule contre épaule», ce qui garantit la cohésion de la vague de sondage et son maintien de façon simple et durable. [...] Les sondes sont tenues verticalement et alignées entre les pieds de chaque sondeur. [Au] commandement «Sondez», la sonde est enfoncée verticalement de deux mètres. [Au] commandement «En avant», les sondeurs avancent et se mettent en position de sondage, les pieds de part et d'autre de la sonde comme précédemment, jusqu'au commandement suivant : «Sondez». Cette méthode garantit un déplacement effectif de 50 cm, et constitue de fait une grille de 50 cm par 50 cm.
