Glare is a laminated material made of alternate layers of aluminium and glass fibre. The word ’Glare’ stands for Glassfibre Reinforced Aluminium. Glare was developed in co-operation with the Delft University of Technology and the Netherlands National Aerospace Laboratory(NLR).... Glare has greatly reduced susceptibility to metal fatigue and is therefore stronger than aluminium, which allows significant weight savings to be achieved.... The Glare material is bonded under high pressure and temperature in [the Glare autoclave]. Glare combines the ideal characteristics of metal and composites. The selected fibre material is glass fibre, and the metal used is aluminium. To ensure high integrity and durability of the aluminium and glass fibre layers, these are securely bonded using an epoxy resin. The resin and bonding must be able to resist the extreme operating conditions encountered in flight, such as pressure, tension and torsion forces, as well as extreme temperatures in polar and tropical regions, and must be designed for a long operational lifetime.  1, fiche 1, Anglais, - Glare%C2%AE

[...] Glare [...] est un stratifié hybride élaboré à partir de couches alternées d'aluminium et de nappes unidirectionnelles de fibres de verre pré-imprégnées de résine époxyde. Ce matériau est 10% moins dense que les alliages d'aluminium et présente des tolérances à l'endommagement et en fatigue supérieures, ainsi qu'une meilleure tenue à la corrosion et une très bonne résistance aux flammes. Of course, NASA probably could have done something similar in the late 1980s if only they had proposed a small space platform in 1984 rather than a monster Space Station. For example, the Marshall Space Flight Center's Science and Applications Space Platform from 1982 would have cost an estimated $500 million to develop. The manned version... would have been slightly more expensive but still far cheaper than the(then-) $8-billion international space station eventually chosen by Reagan. The Polar Platform activities are proceeding according to plan. Manufacture of the Service Module flight-model structure is well advanced and should be completed by end-1994. Integration of the flight model will start in early 1995. CLUSTER Radio Frequency Suitcase for the European Space Operation Centre. VTT Information Technology has delivered the Cluster RF-Suitcase to the European Space Operation Centre(ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany at the end of 1994. The purpose of the Suitcase is to test the RF compatibility between ground stations and spacecraft and to test the uplink and downlink functional characteristics. The CLUSTER RF-Suitcase belongs to the Cluster mission, where four identical spacecraft will be launched into large, elliptic polar orbits around the earth on the early test flight of Ariane 5 at the end of 1995.
