Sulfated polysaccharide used as an antiretroviral and immunomodulator agent.

Drug manufactured by Peninsula Labs which consists of a chain of 8 amino acids which appears to block the entry of HIV into cells bearing the CD4 receptor, a passageway to which HIV is strongly attracted. In that regard, Peptide T is similar to the drug CD4. Peptide T easily enters the brain and has been associated with improvement of neurological symptoms of HIV infection. The several Phase I trials that have involved Peptide T have shown that the drug is not toxic and that it helps to improve the patient’s CD4 count.

Le curdlan est un polysaccharide formé de 400 à 500 résidus de D-glucose enchaînés par des liaisons bêta (1-3); il s'agit d'un polymère linéaire, sans aucune ramification. Ce polysaccharide est produit par des bactéries du genre Alcaligenes comme Alcaligenes faecalis var. myxogenes (aujourd'hui identifiée comme Agrobacterium biovar).

Il a été découvert en 1966 par Harada qui lui a donné le nom de curdlan à cause de sa capacité à se gélifier (curdle en anglais).

Le curdlan est insoluble dans l'eau, l'alcool et la majorité des solvants organiques. Cependant, il se dissout dans les solutions d'alcalis tel que l'hydroxyde de sodium. Il est utilisé en tant qu'additif alimentaire (épaississant, stabilisant).
