There have been no artificial stocking programs for Atlantic sturgeon since the [threatened or endangered species] listings. While it is possible that these could be a tool for recovery in the future, there is no apparent need for these programs... because current evidence suggests that remnant, albeit very small, populations may exist in rivers where Atlantic sturgeon were previously believed to be extirpated. In addition, it is uncertain whether an artificial stock would establish in a non-natal river. For example, genetic analyses of adult sturgeon captured in [one river] indicates that the fish are a remnant of the historical spawning population and are not the sturgeon or the progeny of the sturgeon that were introduced to the [same river].

As for any population viability analysis, the results presented here should be viewed with healthy skepticism. However, the modeling exercise was useful for examining the relative benefits of alternate recovery options, and for highlighting priorities for data collection and research.

In these small-group settings, trust can serve to facilitate the smooth functioning of group processes, but it can also diminish the critical nature of discussion and debate and serve to depoliticize group proceedings altogether. In contrast, Trettin and Musham contend that distrust can offer a ’healthy skepticism, critical thinking, and the ability to question whether the rules of the game are operating as they should’ ...

Approximately 20 American swift foxes will be moving to new homes on the Canadian prairie. The foxes, an endangered species in Canada, will be airlifted from Wyoming to Calgary, and then later released in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan as part of the National Recovery Plan for the Swift Fox. The Canadian population disappeared from the prairies for somme time during the 1930s. A population estimated at 150-200 foxes appears to have found homes in the short-grass prairie in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan. The ultimate aim of all participants in the reintroduction project is to see the swift fox become well enough established to permit its removal from the endangered species list.

Unlike the loss of a gene pool or a species, which is absolute, the significance of the loss of a particular population must be qualified according to certain time limitations. Such limitations(recovery times) are seldom discussed in any detail in environmental impact studies.

The essential ingredients of a recombinant DNA experiment are : 1. A DNA vehicle(vector, replicon) which can replicate in living cells after foreign DNA is inserted into it. 2. A DNA molecule to be replicated(passenger), or a collection of them. 3. A method of joining the passenger to the vehicle. 4. A means of introducing the joined DNA molecule into a host organism in which it can replicate(DNA transformation or transfection). 5. A means of screening or genetic selection for those cells that have replicated the desired recombinant molecule. This is necessary since transformation and transfection methods are inefficient, so that most members of the host cell population have no recombinant DNA replicating in them. This selection or screening for desired recombinants provides a route to recovery of the recombinant DNA of interest in pure form.
