Efforts were undertaken by NAVAIR to make a new, porous, non-metallic, single-base ingredient bearing retainer material available to the bearing industry. The successful results of this effort... belong to the Naval Weapons Support Center, its contractor Singer-Kearfott, Little Falls, NJ, and their subcontractor, Dixon Corporation, Bristol, RI. The new material is a porous polyimide called Meldin 9000. The material was first developed by Dynatech Corporation in conjunction with a Charles Stark Draper Laboratory gyro improvement program sponsored by the Air Force. Laboratory-produced samples of the new material demonstrated a life of over 3, 000 hours as compared to a life of only 300 hours or less for a traditional material.

Evaporimeter(atmometer) An evaporimeter consists of a flat, porous ceramic disk(Bellani plate) in which water is drawn up by capillary action as water is evaporated from the disk. It is used to directly estimate crop evapotranspiration rate. Several commercial models can be easily installed near the edge of a field or on a roadway in a field.(The unit must be located far enough into the field to avoid field boundary effects.) One commercial model provides a green canvas-like material covering the ceramic disc to simulate crop leaf color. Enzyme immobilization method is based on the formation of covalent bonds between enzyme molecules, by means of bi- or multi-functional reagents, leading to three-dimensional crosslinked aggregates which are completely insoluble in water but which do not require the use of water insoluble carriers. This method involves the addition of the appropriate amount of crosslinking agent to an enzyme solution under conditions which give rise to the formation of multiple covalent bonds.

Temporary retention of the active substance in the pores may be carried out by precipitation with a precipitating agent or by freeze drying.

In 1871 an adaptation of the linoleum manufacture was patented which became quite successful : Corticine 17 also called cork carpet. Its material make-up was identical to linoleum, but the manufacture differed in that the cork was not so finely ground and the linseed oil not so highly oxidised. This resulted in a more porous and softer surface, which, like kamptulicon, had a sound-reducing quality. Linoleum, on the other hand, had a smoother surface than corticine, rendering it more "hygienic" a quality in growing demand in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

The bioreactor "plug" is made of slotted PVC pipe which is screw cap sealed at each end. Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms.
