Under time charter parties, the charterer appoints the port agent and it is open to the owner to also appoint his own protective agent to represent his interests. However, it appears that few owners choose to incur this expense and the selected agent is therefore considered as being the ship's agent in a general sense, and is therefore also the owner's agent.
