In bacterial conjugation, the transfer of the bacterial genetic material and of the conjugon as linked elements. Conjugons have three functions : 1. determine the surface properties and synthetic abilities which lead the formation of effective contacts between conjugation partners; 2. mobilize the "genote" to be transferred from donor to recipient; 3. provide the immediate energy source necessary for the transfer of chromosomal material. Conjugons are transferable from cell to cell by transduction via bacteriophage as well as by bacterial conjugation. 1, fiche 2, Anglais, - conduction

Transformation is the process of transferring a free DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid] molecule from a donor to a recipient bacterium. In vitro, the uptake of a plasmid into the DNA of a living microorganism can be useful in determining gene expression and in vivo, transformation is useful to cells for the exchange of information. In the case of plasmid transformation, a plasmid which has a known gene is introduced to competent bacterial cells for uptake. In order for a cell to be competent it must have a binding site for the donor DNA and will usually(in vitro) have been treated with salts for easier uptake of plasmid DNA. 3, fiche 6, Anglais, - competent%20donor%20bacterium%20cell

Although not widely reported, there are a number of other vectors being developed with an eye to gene therapy for genetic deficiency diseases. For this, or for the production of valuable compounds from mammalian cells, it is possible also to use somatic cell hybridization; microcell mediated gene transfer, where donor microcells containing only one or several chromosomes are fused with genetically intact recipients; chromosome mediated gene transfer, involving the endocytosis of cell free chromosomes by the recipient cell with only subchromosomal fragments being retained; and, even DNA mediated gene transfer, where protein free naked DNA is taken up by recipient cells. 2, fiche 7, Anglais, - recipient%20cell
