The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association(RCMA) recommends certain procedures for the application of asphalt aluminum roof coatings... When roll or brush-applying an asphalt aluminum, it is important to finish the strokes in basically the same direction to achieve the best aesthetics. If aluminum flakes orient in the same direction, they reflect light more uniformly. Spray equipment is typically an airless sprayer, however any spray unit capable of spraying the coating in an even pattern can be used. Consult the coating or spray equipment manufacturer for proper selection, as the viscosity of the material, the hose internal diameter size, and length of hose all help determine the type of spray equipment needed for the job.

Surface cracking due to oxidation and shrinkage stresses, which shows as repetitive mounding of an asphalt surface, resembling the hide of an alligator.

Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back.

Greenhouse plastics affect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. There is a significant difference in bee loss among plastic types ... . CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together ... . The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results ... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months.

Bumble bee keeping in greenhouses has encountered some problems because of the escape of the bees... through open vents in late winter and early spring.... New understandings in insect colour vision(Backhaus 1993) have suggested ways by which the visual target of the open vents(daylight with UV)... versus the greenhouse roof and walls(attenuated UV) can be disguised by coloured transparent flaps or blocked by screening so that the bees are not attracted and can not escape. [A standard] testing method measuring flame spread, fuel contribution and smoke density of materials under controlled conditions.

The test equipment consists of a horizontal tunnel 7. 6 m long, 450 mm wide, and 300 mm deep... The roof is removable and lined with a low density material of mineral composition. The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released.

Greenhouse plastics effect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. There is a significant difference in bee loss among plastic types ... . CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together ... . The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results ... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months.

Greenhouse tomatoes and pollination by bumblebees.... Bumble bee keeping in greenhouses has encountered some problems because of the escape of the bees... through open vents in late winter and early spring.... New understandings in insect colour vision(Backhaus 1993) have suggested ways by which the visual target of the open vents(daylight with UV)... versus the greenhouse roof and walls(attenuated UV) can be disguised by coloured transparent flaps or blocked by screening so that the bees are not attracted and can not escape. The former would be easier and cheaper. UV light encourages the germination of spores of grey mould(Botrytis), so UV opaque plastics are favoured.

Le lanterneau est posé sur un cadre métallique raccordé à l'étanchéité de la toiture et en saillie sur le plan de la terrasse.

The necessity of working from the top of the muckpile and the raise-ladder access prevents the use of mechanized equipment in the stope. Only equipment light enough for the miner to handle alone may be used. The air-leg and rock drill, with a combined weight of 45 kg, is the usual tool for drilling the shrinkage stope. Standing on the top of the muckpile, the miner picks up the drill/feed, anchors the leg, braces the rock drill/drill steel against the roof and starts drilling.

The transparent glass or plastic walls and roof of the greenhouse transmit the shorter wavelength, visible light and infrared radiation from the sun but not the longer wavelengths. Thus, during the hours of daylight infrared radiation passes into the greenhouse and warms its atmosphere and the ground on which the house stands. The transparent walls and roof of the greenhouse partly reflect and partly absorb the longer wavelength radiation. Subsequently the walls and roofs re-emit the absorbed radiation into the house. Coating the glass with a non-heat-radiating film, which is transparent to sunlight, further maximizes the heating effect of radiation received.
