Ply: a layer of felt in a built-up roof membrane system. A four-ply membrane system has four layers of felt.

The performance of the membrane depends, to a very large measure, on the method of laying. There is only one in general use in Canada, and it may be referred to as the shingle method.... It is simple to understand, and fast and easy to carry out. Half-lapping gives a two-ply, two-thirds lapping a three-ply, and three-quarters lapping a four-ply roofing membrane. It has the very serious disadvantage that any wrinkling of felts or lifting at the laps tends to provide a direct path to the supporting insulation or deck. This is why it is considered so essential with this method to achieve intimate contact between plies without wrinkles or fishmouths.

Le comportement d'une toiture multicouche dépend largement des méthodes utilisées pour sa mise en œuvre. Au Canada, on utilise généralement une seule méthode, qu'on pourrait appeler la méthode de chevauchement [...] Il est aisé de comprendre son principe qui est d'exécution rapide et simple. Un chevauchement par moitiés donne une toiture multicouche à deux couches, aux deux tiers il donne trois couches et aux trois quarts on obtient quatre couches. Ce système souffre d'un désavantage sérieux, car tout pli ou relèvement des lisières de feutre offre à l'eau une voie directe vers le subjectile. C'est pourquoi il est indispensable d'obtenir un contact intime entre les feutres et d'éviter tout pli ou godet.

A wall of wood or masonry built above the level of the roof, surrounding a roof opening such as for installation of roof fans or other equipment, and at expansion joints in the roof deck.

Joints always constitute weak links in an assembly. Therefore it is good practice to locate them on top of a curb. The curb is built directly on the roof deck and is anchored to it. Along an expansion joint, the curb consists of two separate frames, one on each side of the expansion joint, with a gap for movement in between. On each side of the curb, the roofing membrane is turned up the cant, where it is lapped by a separate base flashing membrane, which extends to the top of the curb.

A built-up roofing consists of plies or layers of roofing felt bonded together on site with hot bitumen. A protective surface coating of gravel or slag is sometimes embedded in a heavy top coating of hot bitumen. It is laid down to conform to the roof deck, and to protect all angles formed by the roof deck with projecting surfaces, and forms a single-unit flexible waterproofed membrane fastened to the deck by cementing and nailing. The simple principle on flat roofs is to turn the membrane up to form a skirting or base flashing on the vertical surfaces, making a large watertight tray. The only outlets from this tray are the roof drains to dispose of water.

The more evident and more serious blisters are structural blisters. They occur in many forms of deformation and are not confined to the exposed surface. They are caused mainly by the expansion of trapped air and water-vapour or moisture or other gases. Air and moisture trapped within the construction tend to expand during a rise in air temperature or from the heat of the sun, and this expansion causes the plies of the roofing to separate and bulge the roof surface in a balloon effect. The blisters are spongy to the touch, and may occur between any of the layers of roofing felt, or between membrane and deck, or membrane and insulation.

Les poches d'air ou d'humidité emprisonnées entre la membrane et le substrat se dilatent sous l'effet de la chaleur soudaine du soleil et déplacent la membrane en formant de petites boursouflures. Une boursouflure n'apparaîtra que si le matériau dont est fait le substrat possède une faible perméabilité; dans ces conditions, le réchauffement de la température sous l'effet du soleil peut être trop rapide pour permettre à l'air ou à la vapeur d'eau de s'échapper par le substrat. De la pression se développe alors dans les poches d'air, ce qui peut provoquer le déplacement et l'étirement de la membrane de couverture et faire grossir les poches d'air ou boursouflures. Si la membrane subit un étirement irréversible, le rafraîchissement subséquent ne permettra pas à la poche d'air de reprendre sa dimension première et il se créera un vide partiel dans la boursouflure alors formée en partie. L'air ou la vapeur d'eau peuvent être aspirés lentement à travers le substrat et remplir la poche d'air initiale, dont la dimension augmente alors légèrement et qui est prête à déclencher, au retour du soleil, un autre cycle de développement de la boursouflure.

Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas(without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system's long-term performance against wind forces.

ROOF technology allows old roof membrane to be renewed without removal. ROOF technology is based upon a thermochemical treatment of bitumen roof coating. With heat applied to a section of roof coating bitumen and bituminiferous mastics start melting. Imbued with own bitumen, roof coating gains improved waterproofing capabilities. Once cooled such coating becomes a tough monolithic layer, smooth and watertight.

Hot-applied rubberized asphalts consist of proprietary blends of asphalt, mineral fillers, elastomers (natural, synthetic, or a blend of both), virgin or reclaimed oil and a thermoplastic resin. It is applied hot in such a manner as to form an impermeable monolithic membrane over the surface to be waterproofed, which may be concrete, gypsum board or wood. Improved versions of this type of system consist of two coats of rubberized asphalt with a polyester mat in between, called the fully reinforced or two-ply system.

An ice dam is a build up of ice and water that works its way under shingles/shakes. When snow/ice from the peak melts (caused by warm spots in the attic or the sun), water slowly runs down the roof. ... Most roofs have a single layer of underlayment (i.e. builder’s felt) that protects against moisture penetration and in many northern states an extra waterproofing membrane is required by building codes.

A study of a number of roofs in which membrane shrinkage had been observed revealed that movement had taken place at one of two planes : at the membrane-insulation interface or at the insulation-deck interface. In certain cases both appeared to have been involved. Examples of the first type consisted of installations where coated base sheets had been placed dry(without asphalt) over polystyrene insulation without adhering. Movement at the insulation-deck interface resulted from improper attachment of the roofing to the deck because of lack of nailing to wooden decks or inadequate adhesion to most others.

Une étude d'un certain nombre de toits dont l'étanchéité avait subi un rétrécissement a révélé que les déplacements s'étaient produits dans l'un des deux plans suivants : à la surface de contact étanchéité - isolant ou au contact isolant - platelage.
