A thermal vacuum test on the first flight vehicle of the H-II Transfer Vehicle(HTV) has been carried out at the Spacecraft Integration and Test Building at the Tsukuba Space Center. The purpose of the test is to evaluate the thermal design of the structure and to verify its endurance in the harsh environment of space by stimulating the vacuum and thermal environment in space. Thermal vacuum test for the Pressurized Carrier and Unpressurized Carrier have already been completed, and the main part of Avionics Module and Propulsion Module combined is now in the 13-meter diameter space chamber for testing.

The first segment to be launched into orbit, designated Z1, will not permanently attach to other truss segments. The Z1 segment is a 10 ft(3 m) cubelike truss made from six machined bulkheads that are bolted together. The truss houses four control moment gyroscopes that form part of the guidance, navigation, and control system. The location of Z1 is nearly in the middle of the station, which makes it an ideal location for the gyroscopes. A micrometeor shield composed of three sheets of 0. 25 in.(6 mm) aluminum about 5 in.(127 mm) apart protects the sensitive gyroscopes from debris. The 18, 300 lb(8, 300 kg) Z1 segment is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of this year. The truss is a transitional structure that will connect to the pressurized Unity module already on orbit. Astronauts will tighten 16 motorized bolts on the circular coupling on the Unity module side into nuts on Z1 and connect the associated utility plug-ins. Pressurized units generally have circular couplings and nonpressurized unit connectors are rectangular.

The COF Element is a multi-purpose cylindrical pressurised laboratory with an Earth-like atmosphere, permanently attached to the ISS. It has a capacity for 10 international standard payload racks(5 of which are allocated for use by other International Partners) with the facilities to be used primarily for the materials science, fluid physics and compatible life science disciplines. The COF also has external attachment points providing resources for Space Science, Earth Observation and Technology disciplines. The COF... will be attached to the "front-end" of the ISS at Node 2. The primary structure is based on the Italian Space Agency's Mini Payload Logistics Module(MPLM) primary structure and is 6. 7 m long by 4. 46 m diameter.

The steady-state operations of the COF systems and the European Payloads located within the COF will be supported by a number of organisations, teams and ground segment facilities both in Europe and the US ... Each facility is interconnected with the ESA provided IGS (Interconnect Ground Subnet). Each NASA ISPR provides 1. 6 m³(55. 5ft³) of internal volume. The rack weighs 104 kg(230 lbm) and can accommodate an additional 700 kg(1543 lbm) of payload equipment. The rack has internal mounting provisions to allow attachment of secondary structure. The ISPRs will be outfitted with a thin center post to accommodate sub-rack-sized payloads, such as the 48. 3 cm(19 in) Spacelab Standard Interface Rack(SIR) Drawer or the Space Shuttle Middeck Locker. The International Space Station's Centrifuge Accommodation Module will take life on a spin in space to achieve experimental results that can be brought down to life on Earth. Unique among ISS [International Space Station] modules, this one will permit long-term study of the effects of varying gravity levels on the structure and function of generations of living organisms and test methods for countering the negative results of those variations. The Common Berthing Mechanism(CBM) is a functional structure that is used to connect the components of the International Space Station(except the Russian modules).... A CBM is composed of two parts, an active CBM that uses an electric motor to make connection, and a passive CBM. To connect these two parts, an astronaut first uses the robot arm to grapple the module on which the passive CBM is attached and move it close to the active CBM. A limit switch located on the active CBM senses when the passive CBM is close enough to the active CBM and generates a signal indicating that preparation for berthing is completed. Next, the active CBM extends four capture latches to catch the passive CBM. The 16 power bolts then extend from the active CBM and are inserted into the holes of the passive CBM, completing the connection. When the pressurized modules are connected, a big O-ring seal made of special rubber will seal the CBMs to maintain air-tightness inside the connected modules.

An improved version of the Calibrated Synthetic Viewing(CSV) system developed at JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] that used models of objects being manipulated and realtime video data to provide synthetic views of the manipulator workspace will be tested. This technology is intended to enable the conduct of manipulator operations in spite of obstructions that prevent a direct view of, for example, the interface between objects being mated. Upgraded software will be supplied by JPL and installed in the ARMSS [Automated Robotic Maintenance of Space Station] and the GCC [Ground Control Console]. An earlier version of this system was tested in FY96 [Fiscal Year]. As in the previous test, the test scenario will involve changing out a Remote Power Conditioning Module(RPCM), an ISS [International Space Station] orbital replacement unit(ORU). The surrounding structure will be "mocked up" to represent a typical ISS structure and ISS procedures will be used for the changeout.

The Stowage hardware consists of stowage racks, stowage lockers, stowage trays, Aisle Stowage Containers(ASCs), Resupply Stowage Platforms(RSPs), and soft stowage bags. Stowage racks consist of a rack structure, a stowage locker structure and stowage trays. The stowage tray is the main "module" for stowing items. The trays vary in length and height(all are roughly 17. 5 inches wide). A single high tray is 5. 25 inches tall, a double is 10. 5 inches, and a triple tray is 15. 75 inches. The different lengths are 10 inches, 17 inches, 30 inches, and 34 inches. Through different combinations of height and length, a variety of sizes of trays are provided to accommodate many different stowage configurations.
