Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Fixed Rescue Facilities (fire)
CONT

A fire sprinkler system shall be provided that will automatically shut-off the water supply flow control valve when the fires heat source has been controlled and a soak timer has expired. If the fires heat source was to regenerate, the fire sprinkler system shall automatically reopen. This cycling feature of the sprinkler system shall not be dependent on manual supervision. Cycling fire sprinkler system shall be a closed head type of preaction system with a supplemental detection system which will activate flow control valve.

CONT

Cycling sprinkler. A development by the sprinkler industry is a sprinkler that cycles on and off as needed.... Under normal conditions, the pilot valve is held closed by the snap disc. Water in the piston chamber holds the piston closed. When the snap disc is heated to the rated temperature, it opens the pilot valve and releases the water from the piston chamber. This allows the piston to open and water to flow from the sprinkler. When the snap disc cools to approximately 100°F, it closes the pilot valve.

OBS

"Flow Control" sprinklers are a product of Central Sprinkler Corporation.

Fiche 5 2007-06-01

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Pollutants
CONT

Perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) ... belongs to a group of organic compounds, perfluorinated organic substances, which have the shared feature that all the hydrogen atoms, bound to the carbon chain, are exchanged for fluorine atoms. A reactive sulphonate group has been bound to one end of the carbon chain. Further chemical groups are bound to the sulphonate group so that various types of surface-active substances are formed. These substances may then in some cases be broken down to PFOS in nature. Altogether there are several hundred different compounds where PFOS forms part of the structure.

OBS

A large proportion of the PFOS produced forms part of polymers, where the final product may contain residues of fluorinated starting substances that have not or have only partially reacted. PFOS is used for surface treatment and as an impregnating agent in a number of products such as carpets, furniture, paper, textiles and leather. Other PFOS-like substances are used as surface-active substances e.g. in cleaning products.

OBS

EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] is proposing a supplemental significant new use rule(SNUR) under section 5(a)(2) of the Toxic Substances Control Act(TSCA) for the following 75 substances : Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid(PFOSH) and certain of its salts(PFOSS), perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride(POSF), certain higher and lower homologues of PFOSH and POSF, and certain other chemical substances, including polymers, that are derived from PFOSH and its homologues. These chemicals are collectively referred to as perfluoroalkyl sulfonates, or PFAS.... In the original proposed SNUR, these chemicals were referred to collectively as perfluorooctylsulfonates, or PFOS, but commenters noted that this generic usage of the term PFOS was inconsistent with the use by the manufacturer, the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company(3M), of PFOS to refer only to chemicals with an eight-carbon, or C8, chain length.

OBS

PFOS: Although correct, this might be a non-recognized abbreviation; not to be used alone, to avoid any risk of confusion.

OBS

sulphonate: obsolete form of "sulfonate."

CONT

Polluants organiques persistants (POP). [...]

OBS

sulphonate : forme vieillie de «sulfonate».

Although the codling moth mating disruption technique is widely used throughout the West, most orchards require one or two supplemental treatments of insecticide to adequately control the pest. Besides killing the natural predators of the codling moth and other pests, it is highly likely that regulations will eliminate or severely restrict pesticides used for supplemental control in coming years.

Subject field(s)
  • Brush, Prairie and Forest Fires
  • Fire Prevention
OBS

In intensively managed areas, roads and other means of access constructed for other purposes provide most of the access needed in fire control activities.... As use and development created a skeleton system of roads, critical needs for fire control shifted to the supplemental roads needed to enable fast attack to be more uniform in the protected area.
