Elle a pour objectif d'améliorer la fonction de l'arrière-pied en éliminant les douleurs et en corrigeant les défauts axiaux de l'arrière-pied.

Bien que quatre os de l'arrière-pied soient impliqués dans cette procédure chirurgicale, le nom de triple arthrodèse utilisé par les Anglo-Saxons fait référence aux trois plans (coronal, sagittal et transversal) dans laquelle la correction de l'arrière-pied est possible. La littérature française fait référence au couple de torsion (articulation de Chopart, talonaviculaire et calcanéocuboïdienne) et à l'étage sous-talien, et dénomme donc cette même intervention comme «double arthrodèse».

Normally, the anterior talofibular ligament is tight in all positions of the ankle joint, and there should be no forward movement of the talus on the tibia. Under abnormal conditions, however, the talus slides anteriorly from under the cover of the ankle mortise(positive draw sign).
