Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration.

In other words, a reflectaphor excites a state of intense wondering, doubt, and uncertainty-a sense of nuance.

If there is a question of a wind instrument in the Sacso project, it is not a matter of music but of flight mechanics and aerodynamics. Sacso designates a very particular model testing mechanism in a wind tunnel, dedicated to predicting the behavior of aircraft in flight. Contrary to the traditional setup where the model is fixed to the wall by some rigid device(sting, mast, or other), here it is suspended and driven in motion in the flow by nine cables, with controlled tension. Recent robotics techniques are used to control the system, namely "hybrid force-position control of parallel redundant kinematics. "This mechanism is currently dimensioned for the low-velocity domain(0-35 m/s) and is installed in Onera's vertical wind tunnel in Lille.

Le tensiomètre permet de mesurer la charge hydraulique du sol y. Il est constitué d'une bougie en céramique poreuse fixée à l'extrémité d'un tube, enfoncé dans le sol à la profondeur souhaitée. Le tube ainsi que la bougie sont remplis d'eau dégazée et l'ensemble est hermétiquement fermé par un bouchon et relié par un capillaire à un manomètre de mercure. Le système ainsi mis en place autorise des échanges osmotiques à travers la paroi poreuse. Une certaine quantité d'eau sort du tensiomètre jusqu'à ce que la dépression équilibrée par la colonne de mercure soit égale au potentiel de l'eau dans le sol. Si l'humidité du sol vient à baisser, l'eau diffuse à travers la bougie poreuse vers le milieu environnant : il se produit une dépression à l'intérieur du système mise en évidence par le manomètre. De même, lorsque le sol s'humidifie, la tension baisse. Lorsqu'il est saturé, elle est nulle. [...] Les tensiomètres sont des appareils simples, précis et très utilisés mais la gamme de potentiels qu'ils permettent de mesurer est limitée (ils ne fonctionnent plus à y > 0.09MPa). En effet, lorsque la succion atteint des valeurs de cet ordre, de l'air peut passer à travers la bougie poreuse et le tensiomètre se désamorce.

Simply put, the pressure chamber... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf(or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem(the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water : a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar(1 Bar=14. 5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal(1 MPa=10 bars).
