The region of shoreline between the limits of mean high and mean low tide levels.

Between the high and low tide marks lies a strip of shoreline that is regularly covered and uncovered by the advance and retreat of the tides. This meeting ground between land and sea is called the "intertidal. "

OBS

To many geomorphologists, the term "foreshore" is considered synonymous with the intertidal zone. These definitions are compared with the legal definitions of the "foreshore" as exist in Britain under the three different property law regimes; English, Scottish and Udal law. The legal definitions and many of the geomorphological definitions are based on tidal data. The differences between the observed tides at a tide gauge and on a beach at a distance from the gauge are considered. It is concluded that the term "foreshore" has a very specific legal meaning in each property law regime, therefore the authors propose that the term "foreshore" should be used to relate to the legally defined area of the coast and, unless specifically referring to the foreshore, scientists should use the term "intertidal."

En las costas hay una zona o banda de terreno que, al subir y bajar la marea, pasa alternativamente de estar cubierta por el agua a estar descubierta; la banda costera que pasa del medio acuático al aéreo durante las mareas vivas es la zona intermareal. Por encima de ella se encuentra la zona supralitoral, a donde llegan las salpicaduras del mar, y por debajo, la zona infralitoral o sublitoral, que nunca queda a descubierto.

Parte de la costa comprendida entre los niveles de pleamar y bajamar que es barrida periódicamente por el flujo de la marea.

Compris entre le zéro hydrographique et la laisse des plus fortes marées, l'estran est soumis à l'action du déferlement et des courants associés. Il atteint son plus grand développement sur les côtes planes et à fort marnage. On distingue les estrans vaseux, sableux ou rocheux (en ce dernier cas, il peut correspondre à une plate-forme d'abrasion.)

A low-tide elevation is a naturally formed area of land which is surrounded by and above water at low tide but submerged at high tide. Where a low-tide elevation is situated wholly or partly at a distance not exceeding the breadth of the territorial sea from the mainland or an island, the low-water line on that elevation may be used as the baseline for measuring the breadth of the territorial sea. Where a low-tide elevation is wholly situated at a distance exceeding the breadth of the territorial sea from the mainland or an island, it has no territorial sea of its own.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the provincial BC Land Use Coordination Office work together to address developmental and environmental planning for the land and the nearshore waters of the Central Coast Region. For this purpose, the Central Coast Region extends from Cape Caution to Princess Royal Island, and includes the area on the mainland south to Bute Inlet, as well as the adjacent waters to the high tide mark on Vancouver Island. Part of the Oceans Initiatives to Conserve Pacific Marine and Coastal Ecosystems.

Pêches et Océans Canada et le Bureau provincial de coordination pour l'aménagement du territoire de la Colombie-Britannique (BC Land Use Coordination Office) collaborent à la planification du développement et de la protection de l'environnement pour les terres et les eaux situées proches de la côte dans la région centrale du littoral. La « côte centrale » s'étend du cap Caution à l'île Princess Royal et inclut la région continentale située au sud de l'inlet Bute ainsi que les eaux adjacentes à la marque de marée haute sur l'île de Vancouver. Fait partie des Initiatives pour la conservation des écosystèmes marins et côtiers du Pacifique.

An interesting phenomenon occurs at Kiabukwa, in that the discharge of hot water from the hot spring fluctuates in a tidal cycle of 12 1/2 hours, although the site is about 1300 Km from the sea. This is probably due to the action of "land tides" opening and closing horizontal subterranean fissures by very small movements which are nevertheless significant in relation to the width of what are probably very narrow fissures.
