An organized mass of thunderstorms with a slight cyclonic wind circulation of less than 20 knots.

CONT

The first sign of hurricane genesis(development) is the appearance of a cluster of thunderstorms over the tropical oceans, called a tropical disturbance. Tropical disturbances most commonly form in one of three different ways, all of which involve the convergence of surface winds. Near the equator, the easterly trade winds converge(come together) to trigger numerous thunderstorms in a region called the Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ). Occasionally, a cluster of thunderstorms will break away from the ITCZ and become better organized. Another mechanism is the convergence of air that occurs along a mid-latitude frontal boundary that has made its way into the Gulf of Mexico or off the East Coast of Florida. The last mechanism is the easterly wave, a tropical disturbance that travels from east to west in the region of the tropical easterlies. Converging winds on the east side of the easterly wave trigger the development of thunderstorms. In fact, most Atlantic hurricanes can be traced to easterly waves that form over Western Africa.

The tilt of the earth's axis gives rise to two important parallels of latitude in each hemisphere : the tropics and the polar circles : the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn currently lie 23. 4° north and south of the equator respectively, and the arctic and antarctic circles lie at 66. 6° north and south latitude respectively(i. e. 23. 4° from the north and south poles). The dream of a rain forest saved by children began in 1987 at a small primary school in rural Sweden. The study of tropical forests prompted nine-year-old Roland Tiensuu to ask what he could do to keep the rain forest and the animals who live in it safe from destruction? A campaign raised money to help the Monteverde Conservation League buy and save threatened rain forest in Costa Rica. Roland and his classmates raised enough money to buy 15 acres(6 hectares) of rain forest. Costa Rican and international staff and volunteers work throughout the zone in forest preservation, reforestation, environmental education, and sustainable development. Called Bosque Eterno de los Ninos(Children's Eternal Forest), it is the first international children's rain forest in the world, a rain forest being saved by and for children, for the planet itself, for now and for tomorrow.

Bolivia's glaciers, situated between lat 14°37’ and 18°23’ S. on the southern edge of the tropical zone of the Southern Hemisphere, are affected by the change between intertropical circulation in the summer and southeast trade winds in the winter. During the southern summer, this generally means precipitation that decreases in amount and duration from north to south. This author believes that the term "summer" is appropriate for the rainy season in Bolivia, in contrast to the central tropics of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, even though Schubert(1992) gives a different view. Inhabitants of these countries, however, seldom refer to summer or winter; they speak of dry and rainy seasons.
