The tropics are a region of excess heating from the sun and of towering cloud convection and rainfall in narrow latitudinal bands. Compared with areas at higher latitudes, the frequency of storms and the average strength of the winds are low.

The storm frequency is calculated by counting only the number of storms that occurred within the period between buying and selling. We focus on this number because the previous owner’s storm experience or future storms that occur after the date of sale do not affect the seller’s perceptions of risk.

Graminée de l'Inde, de la Réunion, des Philippines, du genre andropogon. Les tiges de vétiver sont nombreuses, unies, très droites, hautes de 1 à 3 m. On les utilise en différentes régions tropicales pour confectionner des nattes ou des ouvrages de vannerie. Les racines fournissent, par distillation à la vapeur, une huile essentielle aromatique à odeur forte et tenace, utilisée en parfumerie et en savonnerie. Très répandu sur la côte de Coromandel, à la Réunion, aux Antilles, aux Philippines, à Maurice, le vétiver est employé pour préserver les vêtements de laine et les fourrures des attaques des insectes. Some of the most beautiful butterflies belong to the family Papilionidae; these are familiar to most people, although only few species are represented in Europe. Even in the tropics there are not a great number of species. These tropical forms, with their extraordinarily brilliant coloration, are among the most decorative objects in nature. Most of the swallowtail species belong to the genus "Papilio"; their hindwings are usually elaborated to form tails. The common European swallowtail is "Papilio machaon"... In the U. S. A. the "tiger swallowtail"(Papilio glaucus) is best known.

"Papilionid", the anglicized rendition of "Papilionidae", is used primarily in scientific contexts; "swallowtail" being the non-precise equivalent most commonly seen in non-scientific English contexts.

La Organización pro Flora Neotrópica (OFN), establecida en 1964, es la única organización con la misión de producir un inventario publicado de las plantas de todos lo trópicos del Nuevo Mundo. Esta región, el Neotrópico, soporta las mas ricas y mas pobremente conocidas comunidades de plantas de cualquier flora tropical. El principal objetivo de OFN es la producción de una Flora de toda la región de América tropical publicada en una serie monográfica, Flora Neotrópica. Hasta 1997 han sido publicadas 75 monografías, tratando 7,346 especies de hongos, líquenes, musgos, y plantas con semillas.
