Turbosphere [is] that part of the troposphere where the mixing of the atmosphere is achieved more by convection than by diffusion. Its upper limit is the turbopause, an ill-defined layer about 100 km above the earth's surface.

Even the seemingly small level of disagreement between surface and deep layer temperature trends can not be reproduced by current GCMís, which slave globally-averaged deep tropospheric temperatures to any surface temperature fluctuations... However, we know that convective air currents and the air-conditioning effects of water cause the atmospheric temperature profile to change by a much larger amount, about 80 deg. C, between the surface and 10 km altitude when compared to a hypothetical Earth without these processes... Thus, it is critical to validate whether the parameterizations of moist convective processes in GCMís are realistic enough to capture the ways in which the tropospheric temperature profile fluctuates naturally in response to this transport of heat from the surface to the upper troposphere.

The general term applied to the atmosphere above the troposphere.

What is the upper atmosphere? The neutral atmosphere consists broadly of the thermosphere and the ionosphere. The thermosphere extends from around 80 kilometers to around 500 kilometers, and is characterised by a sharp increase in temperature, again due to UV absorption, and stratification of the constituent neutral gases.

The atmosphere of the earth can be divided roughly into four layers : from the ground to about 10km above the lowest layer is called the troposphere, from there to about 50km is the stratosphere, from there to about 80km is the mesosphere and above that is the thermosphere. The upper atmosphere includes both the mesosphere and the thermosphere.

The addition of greenhouse gases should lead to a warming of the lower atmosphere (the troposphere) and a cooling of the upper atmosphere (stratosphere and higher levels).

Au-delà [de la moyenne atmosphère -stratosphère et mésosphère-] débute le domaine de la haute atmosphère où, dans la thermosphère, des transformations physiques et chimiques affectent de plus en plus profondément un air devenu très raréfié et soumis à une température considérablement croissante avec l'altitude. La thermosphère est prolongée par l'exosphère, où l'altitude est désormais suffisante pour qu'une part notable des particules ionisées constituant alors l'atmosphère échappe à l'attraction de la gravitation terrestre.

[La] haute atmosphère [est la] partie de l'atmosphère située au-dessus de la basse atmosphère. Les limites de la haute atmosphère varient énormément d'un auteur à l'autre; il s'agit d'un terme qui sert à désigner commodément et sans trop de précision la région située au-dessus de celle qui présente de l'intérêt pour un auteur donné. De façon générale, la haute atmosphère commence au-dessus de la tropopause. En ce qui a trait à l'ozone stratosphérique, certains auteurs repoussent les limites de la haute atmosphère jusqu'à la stratopause.

Certains auteurs, dont l'Organisation météorologique mondiale [OMMV 1992] situe la «haute atmosphère» au-dessus de la mésopause; d'autres, la situe au-dessus de la stratopause et d'autres encore au-dessus de la tropopause.
