Avalanches release from snow slopes in two distinct ways. A point release or loose snow avalanche starts when a small amount of loose snow... slips and begins to slide down a slope, setting additional snow in motion. Alternatively, a slab avalanche occurs when a plate or slab of cohesive snow begins to slide as a unit before breaking-up. Following a slab avalanche, a distinct fracture line or crown fracture is visible at the top of the slide.

Le type de départ permet la distinction entre avalanche de plaque et avalanche à départ ponctuel. L'avalanche de plaque, principal souci des personnes pratiquant des activités de loisirs en montagne enneigée [...] est caractérisée par une cassure linéaire fracturant le manteau neigeux. La neige ainsi mise en mouvement peut être dure (plaque dure) ou «poudreuse» (plaque friable). Les plaques sont, en majorité, déclenchées accidentellement lors du passage de personnes. Elles peuvent être déclenchées à distance.

The Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder instrument records bright sunshine.... The Meteorological Service of Canada began using this instrument in 1881. The radiant heat of the sun, concentrated by the spherical glass lens, burns a narrow track in a specially prepared card mounted below the lense in a portion of a spherical bowl. A low sun has feeble burning power so the number of possible hours of "bright sunshine" is less than the number of hours of "visible sunshine", the sunshine unit used in the United States

The lower limit for bright sunshine (based on a Campbell-Stokes recorder) is between 70 W/m² (very dry air) and 280 W/m² (very humid air).

The speed of light in a vacuum is an important physical constant denoted by the letter c for "constant" or the Latin word "celeritas" meaning "swiftness". It is the speed of all electromagnetic radiations, including visible light, in a vacuum. More generally, it is the speed of anything having zero rest mass.... In metric units, the speed of light is exactly 299, 792, 458 metres per second(1, 079, 252, 848. 8 km/h). The fundamental SI unit of length, the metre, has been defined since October 21, 1983, as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299, 792, 458 of a second; any increase in the precision of the measurement of the speed of light would refine the definition of the metre, but not alter the numerical value of c. The approximate value of 3x108 m/s is commonly used in rough estimates. In imperial units, the speed of light is about 670, 616, 629. 2 miles per hour or 983, 571, 056 feet per second, which is about 186, 282, 397 miles per second, or roughly one foot per nanosecond. The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium.

An International Development Research Centre(IRDC) Project. The Farm Machinery Unit of Malawi, in conjunction with the Tropical Development and Research Institute, developed the first model of a hand-operated wooden groundnut sheller. IDRC funded further testing and modification of the sheller, and initial trials were run for a confectionery groundnut variety. Market standards — 90% average whole kernel efficiency(WKE) or 10% visible kernel damage — were met.

Un projet du Centre de recherches pour le développement international (CRDI). En collaboration avec l'Institut de recherche sur le développement des zones tropicales, le Service des machines agricoles du Malawi a mis au point le premier modèle de décortiqueur d'arachides manuel en bois. Le CRDI a financé d'autres essais et la modification du décortiqueur, puis les premiers essais pratiques ont été réalisés avec une variété d'arachides destinées à la confiserie. Le décortiqueur a permis de respecter les normes du marché : efficience moyenne de 90 % pour les graines complètes ou 10 % de dommages visibles aux graines.

All atoms are about the same size, and this fact is a clue to the nature of their structure. The atomic diameter is about 2 X 10[ superscript]-8 cm(2 hundred-millionths of a centimeter). Since this is only 1/1000 of the wavelength of visible light, atoms cannot be seen in the ordinary sense, even with microscope.

Most didactic operations in today’s tutors consist of a single basic action, such as presenting a piece of prestored text or submitting a selected problem. Since these prefabricated interventions are didactically planned during system design, the granularity of the decisions that remain to the system itself is fairly coarse. It can be refined, however, if the underlying plan or the set of expectations are made explicit to the system.
