A pole with bucket for raising water used especially in Egypt.

Shaduf : Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft(2. 4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process.

Shadufs can be used in a series where it is desired to raise water to a height exceeding the range of a single one. It has been suggested that the massive stones used in building the pyramids of Egypt were raised by an ancient variant of this device.

À la place de la mêche, on trouve soit une tige, soit une plaque. La tige descend doucement, quelques centimètres par minute et s'enfonce dans le fruit en transperçant d'abord la peau puis la chair. Le capteur mesure la force nécessaire pour traverser ces différentes couches. La tige peut être remplacée par une plaque. Dans ce cas, on mesure alors les forces nécessaires pour comprimer les fruits sur quelques (en général entre 2 et 5 % selon les fruits étudiés) pourcents de leur diamètre.

... a major container failure, into two or more pieces, at a moment in time when the contained liquid is at a temperature well above its boiling point at normal atmospheric pressure. A typical example is that of a propane tank engulfed in a fire.... When the metal fails, the liquid is exposed to atmospheric pressure and is well above its boiling point. Under certain conditions this results in a violent explosion. Once containment is lost, the liquid inside the tank boils, since it is no longer under pressure, and gives the first two letters of the phenomenon-Boiling Liquid. As the liquid boils, vapour is formed. The specific volume of the vapour is much larger than that of the liquid, so there is expansion-Expanding Vapour. There is an Explosion because there is a shock wave and the container is torn apart.

BLEVEs can occur when a pressure liquified tank is in a fire. Vessel contents are at a temperature above their atmospheric boiling point. When the tank ruptures there is flash evaporation. Energy is released quickly and an explosion results.

So named because of their resemblance to cherries, red cherry peppers are deep orange to bright red at maturity. Nearly spherical, slender long stems hold these cherrylike beauties proudly above the foliage of the plant. Ranging from mild to fairly hot, some are quite sweet. They may be small or large and either erect or pendent. Producing smooth rich dark green leaves, this lovely plant is often grown as an ornamental, as well as for its fiery fruit. Cherry peppers are never dried.

[A] mobile jack-up platform... consists basically of a dumb barge which can raise itself out of the water on legs to well above storm wave height, and upon which is mounted a drilling rig. In general, the silicaneous, metallic oxides and active earth types of adsorbents are electrically polar-that is, their molecular structure contains an unsymmetrical electron distribution. Since polar substances have strong attraction for one another and since water is highly polar, the polar adsorbents mentioned above retain water in preference to most other fluids and are, therefore, incapable of adsorbing non-aqueous gases efficiently from a humid atmosphere. For use in air conservation, however, which requires a sorbent to extract very small quantities of a very numerous variety of gases and vapors from either dry or humid air during a very brief interval of contact, non-polar adsorbents such as specially processed carbon of high activity, dense structure and extreme relative hardness have been found to be adequate. Activated carbon, being non-polar and hence electronically symmetrical in structure, has no particular affinity for moisture and preferentially adsorbs organic gases and vapors.

Hierarchical classification. Classifiers utilizing hierarchical, or sequential, architectures generally perform well for remote sensing applications. Typically, when discriminating land cover types, there is a benefit to separating the data into general groupings rather than specific classes, as well as to removing those classes which are easily separable from the rest. This multiscale framework in terms of class separability reduces the complexity of the classifier, both in terms of training and decision making. This is because the classifier does not need to distinguish between all classes, just one class(or a few) from the rest. By employing a hierarchical classifier, different inputs can be used at each level of the overall classification process depending on the classes to be discriminated. This then allows for a possible reduction in the number of inputs, or for the use of class specific data such as topography, at a given level. The described benefits of a hierarchical architecture generally lead to an increase in classification accuracy.... A hierarchical version of the above MRF-based classifier was developed to account for the class dependent variation in backscatter associated with changes in incidence angle. A methodology for "correcting" SAR data according to class-specific models is described and is then presented as the first level in the architecture of the hierarchical classifier.

A satellite's lifetime as well as its launch weight is thus determined by the amount of fuel aboard for its thruster system. While most current satellites use a chemical bipropellant propulsion system, a XIPS-equipped satellite instead uses the impulse generated by a thruster ejecting electrically charged particles at high velocities. XIPS requires only one propellant, xenon, and does its stationkeeping job using a fraction of that required by a chemical propellant system.

A list of all the important formation tops picked in the well by the petroleum geologist. Notice there are two numbers for each top. The first number is the actual measured depth in feet from a fixed elevation reference point on the rig(usually the KB, or Kelly Bushing, which is located about 1 feet above the derrick floor). The second number has a minus(-) sign in front of it. This is the calculated depth of the formation top in relation to the permanent datum, which is usually sea level. This type of top is known as a "subsea" top. Subsea tops can be easily compared to each other because they are all adjusted to the same elevation reference.

Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage(SW-SAGD).... Steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well(SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place.

Celle-ci forme ce que l'on appelle une chambre de vapeur, cède sa chaleur au contact de l'huile en place et se condense en eau liquide au niveau de ce contact. L'huile voit sa viscosité diminuer par cet apport de chaleur et peut s'écouler plus facilement. L'huile et l'eau liquide s'écoulent le long de la chambre de vapeur sous l'action de la gravité vers le puits horizontal inférieur. Afin de limiter le nombre de puits, des ingénieurs ont proposé de réaliser l'injection de vapeur et la production de l'huile réchauffée et de l'eau due à la condensation de la vapeur, dans un unique puits horizontal. Dans le domaine de la production améliorée des bruts lourds, on peut distinguer 5 méthodes : - injection de vapeur : cette méthode est la plus couramment employée dans le domaine de la récupération améliorée. Deux principales stratégies peuvent être adoptées : 1) celle de la stimulation par injection cyclique («Huff and Puff»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur de façon discontinue (cyclique) et de récupérer l'huile au même endroit. Cette technique a l'avantage de produire rapidement de l'huile, donc d'augmenter la productivité, cependant elle ne permet pas un taux de récupération élevé des huiles en place; 2) celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur («Steam Drive»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur sur une longue période à partir d'un puits spécifiquement dédié à cette fonction et de récupérer l'huile dans d'autres puits situés aux environs. Cette technique, à l'inverse de celle à injection cyclique, permet d'atteindre de façon progressive un taux de récupération élevé. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui. Elle permet, par l'utilisation de puits horizontaux multidrains d'améliorer considérablement la productivité et le taux de récupération des huiles en place, tout en minimisant l'utilisation de vapeur.

Thermocouple Psychrometry. A relatively modern technique for measuring water potential uses the flow of current through a small thin thermocouple(TC) to measure the water content of the vapor phase above a sample. Electrical current flows through a TC as a function of temperature, and temperature changes as water evaporates off the TC. The flux of water off the TC is determined by the amount of water in the vapor phase, which in turn, depends upon the water potential of the sample. Today, we will measure the water potential as well as the osmotic potential of some plant samples using the Decagon thermocouple psychrometer and nanovoltmeter. This device has nine sample chambers. We will fill three of the chambers with standard solutions to provide calibration of the TC, three with leaf samples, and three with crushed leaf samples(crushed to eliminate pressure potential P, leaving only osmotic potential as contributing to water potential). We will then let the samples equilibrate for 2 hours. We will need to calibrate the Decagon instrument to correct for the effect of temperature, pressure, and relative humidity on it's performance.
