A small-diameter(2-4 in), removable pipe, set and sealed in a well inside a large-diameter casing placed in a producing horizon, through which oil and gas are produced(brought to the surface from the reservoir).

When oil is found, the drilling stops. The bit and string are pulled out of the hole, and a pipe called a production casing is put into the hole and cemented in place. Another pipe, called tubing, is put inside the casing. The oil will be pumped through the tubing, which is connected to valves on a Christmas tree.

Production tubing is steel pipe smaller in diameter than the production casing. It is lowered into the casing and held in place by packers which also isolate the producing layers of rocks.

There are three principal types of augers used for well drilling : bucket augers, solid-stem augers, and hollow-stem augers.... Solid-stem augers consist of spiral flanges welded to a pipe. One length of pipe(or auger section) is called a flight; multiple auger sections are often referred to as continuous flighting. The leading auger flight has a special bit or cutter head attached that cuts a hole for the flights to follow. Flights are added as the hole is drilled deeper. Cuttings from the drilling process are brought to the surface by the action of the augers.... Hollow-stem augers are similar to solid-stem augers in design, except that drill rods can pass through the auger sections.... Because the flights are hollow, they can be used as temporary casing to hold the hole open while the permanent casing is installed. Wells drilled with hollow-stem augers have been used to construct water supply wells, but they are more often used to construct monitoring wells.

Il existe deux types de tarières : les tarières creuses et les tarières pleines. Le principal avantage des tarières creuses par rapport aux tarières pleines est de permettre l'installation du puits d'observation sans avoir à retirer les tarières du sol. L'utilisation des tarières pleines n'est possible que dans les matériaux cohésifs car les parois du forage doivent rester verticales assez longtemps pour mettre en place le puits d'observation, la lanterne de sable et le bouchon d'étanchéité.

Les tarières creuses sont des tarières continues avec une lumière centrale dans laquelle est introduit un train de tiges dont l'extrémité est munie d'un taillant. Ce taillant permet de forer les sols qui sont remontés en surface par le mouvement ascendant de l'hélicoïde. Si l'on désire prélever un échantillon de sol, le train de tiges est remonté, le taillant est remplacé par un outil de prélèvement de sols (un carottier par exemple) descendu jusqu'au fond du forage.

Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease.

Il n'y a pas de spécifications particulières quant au type de matériaux à utiliser. La seule restriction dans le choix d'un couvercle est imposée lorsque la tête du puits est installée au niveau du sol. Le couvercle doit être suffisamment étanche et rigide pour prévenir l'infiltration d'eau de surface. Conductor casing is installed first, usually prior to the arrival of the drilling rig. The hole for conductor casing is often drilled with a small auger drill, mounted on the back of a truck. Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage (SW-SAGD). ... Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well (SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place.

It was through these casing conveyed installations that PROMORE was asked by several clients to develop a higher temperature casing conveyed system for use with their single well SAGD [steam assisted gravity drainage] process.... Le puits supérieur est utilisé pour injecter de la vapeur d'eau. Celle-ci forme ce que l'on appelle une chambre de vapeur, cède sa chaleur au contact de l'huile en place et se condense en eau liquide au niveau de ce contact. L'huile voit sa viscosité diminuer par cet apport de chaleur et peut s'écouler plus facilement. L'huile et l'eau liquide s'écoulent le long de la chambre de vapeur sous l'action de la gravité vers le puits horizontal inférieur. Afin de limiter le nombre de puits, des ingénieurs ont proposé de réaliser l'injection de vapeur et la production de l'huile réchauffée et de l'eau due à la condensation de la vapeur, dans un unique puits horizontal. Dans le domaine de la production améliorée des bruts lourds, on peut distinguer 5 méthodes : - injection de vapeur : cette méthode est la plus couramment employée dans le domaine de la récupération améliorée. Deux principales stratégies peuvent être adoptées : 1) celle de la stimulation par injection cyclique («Huff and Puff»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur de façon discontinue (cyclique) et de récupérer l'huile au même endroit. Cette technique a l'avantage de produire rapidement de l'huile, donc d'augmenter la productivité, cependant elle ne permet pas un taux de récupération élevé des huiles en place; 2) celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur («Steam Drive»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur sur une longue période à partir d'un puits spécifiquement dédié à cette fonction et de récupérer l'huile dans d'autres puits situés aux environs. Cette technique, à l'inverse de celle à injection cyclique, permet d'atteindre de façon progressive un taux de récupération élevé. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui. Elle permet, par l'utilisation de puits horizontaux multidrains d'améliorer considérablement la productivité et le taux de récupération des huiles en place, tout en minimisant l'utilisation de vapeur.
