La formation de lignes brunes à l'interface humide/sec («tidelines») dans le papier est un phénomène qui a été observé et décrit depuis les années 1930. Malgré les efforts de recherche engagés, le mécanisme de formation de ces lignes brunes n'a pu être totalement élucidé. [...] Dans le cas de traitements locaux impliquant l'utilisation d'eau ou d'humidité, le problème de formation de lignes brunes sur les documents cellulosiques se pose. Le phénomène s'observe en suspendant une bande de papier verticalement, la partie inférieure immergée de quelques centimètres (l'eau monte par capillarité dans le réseau fibreux du papier). Une ligne brune se forme progressivement au niveau de l'interface humide/sec et se stabilise en quelques heures au niveau d'équilibre entre la montée capillaire et l'évaporation.
