The purpose of the Global Observing System (GOS) is to provide, from all parts of the globe and from outer space, high-quality, standardized observations of the state of the atmosphere and ocean surface. GOS comprises observing facilities at stations on land and at sea, and on aircraft, meteorological satellites and other platforms. These facilities are owned and operated by the 185 Member countries of WMO [World Meteorological Organization].
