MARKHURD's aerial photo capability is second to none. We currently have ten (10) aircraft, all with airborne GPS [Global Positioning System] equipment and several with dual camera mounts, that have photographed well over 1,000,000 line miles of imagery in 35 countries. ... Twelve (12) recently calibrated precision mapping cameras with 3-1/2", 6", 8-1/4" and 12" lens facilitate timely project completion. Five (5) complete aerial photography reproduction laboratories greatly enhance our ability to complete this important task in a timely manner.

Originally, photo plots were established using laser detection and photogrammetry, but nowadays aerial photography and remote sensing are more popular.

CONT

Photo plots provide only indirect measures based on model predictions. Ground plots will sample biomass, but samples will be small and the within-plot error will be large.

Interprétation de photographies aériennes [...] Grâce à l'examen de ces photos, il est possible de déterminer si une placette est une surface forestière ou pas, et donc de sélectionner les surfaces à visiter sur le terrain.

À l'origine, les placettes photos (photo plots) étaient réalisées à partir d'observation radar et par photogrammétrie, mais de nos jours on a surtout recours aux données fournies par la photographie aérienne et la télédétection.
