La angiografía digital es un método de generar imágenes de estructuras vasculares basado en la técnica de sustracción, la cual trata de "sustraer" determinados elementos o componentes de una imagen que dificultan la visualización de algunos detalles concretos. Básicamente, el sistema consiste en una imagen basal de la que se obtiene un negativo o máscara, que es la imagen inversa de la basal. Si sobre la imagen basal añadimos un nuevo elemento, como el contraste intravascular, la superposición de éste con la máscara permitirá borrar o sustraer todos los elementos de la imagen basal, dejando únicamente el elemento añadido nuevo.
