Arc électrique avec électrodes de carbone. Bien que l'arc à électrodes de carbone ait été le premier étudié, nous n'avons parlé que d'électrodes métalliques, presque universellement utilisée. Cependant, les électrodes au charbon sont parfois encore employées en soudage. L'arc est très stable et le soudeur doit le maintenir plus long que l'arc métallique afin que les particules de carbones incandescentes ne souillent pas le cordon. Il est évident que l'arc au charbon ne peut être qu'une source de chaleur; le métal d'apport est fourni par une baguette, sauf dans le cas d'une tôle mince à bords relevés où ces bords suffisent à alimenter le cordon.
