Le climat polaire s'observe dans les régions de latitude supérieure à 60/70°. Il est marqué par des hivers glacials et des étés froids (température moyenne de cette saison inférieure à 10 °C). Les précipitations, faibles en moyenne, tombent principalement sous forme de neige. Le blizzard qui y règne fréquemment est dû à un vent violent qui soulève et entraîne la neige poudreuse.
