Concept proposé en 1979 par H.T. Kung et C. Leiserson (Carnegie Mellon University) : construire un ordinateur au moyen d'un grand nombre de processeurs standards mais connectés entre eux à l'image du cœur humain.

Le concept d'architecture systolique. Le nom vient de l'analogie entre le fonctionnement de ce type de machine et celui du cœur : la systole désigne le stade de la contraction du cœur. Une machine systolique est une sorte de réseau de processeurs au travers duquel circulent des données. Celles-ci sont injectées dans le réseau par un calculateur appelé «hôte». Les processeurs du réseau fonctionnent de façon synchrone, par battements : au cours d'un battement, chaque processeur reçoit des données, qu'il traite et transmet à ses plus proches voisins (principe appliqué au traitement de la parole).

L'architecture systolique est au total le résultat d'un mariage heureux entre l'organisation SIMD dont elle conserve la régularité et le caractère synchrone, et l'architecture pipeline. Son principal intérêt est de permettre le traitement «au vol» des données, ce que ne fait pas de manière naturelle une architecture SIMD.
