The lunar surface sensing probe attached to each landing gear footpad, except the forward one, is an electromechanical device. The probes are retained in the stowed position, against the primary strut, until landing gear deployment. During deployment, mechanical interlocks are released permitting spring energy to extend the probes so that the probe head is approximately 5 feet below the footpad. When any probe touches the lunar surface, pressure on the probe head will complete the circuit that advises the astronauts to shut down the descent engine.

On utilise parfois ce terme de sol pour désigner les couches superficielles formées par l'altération de la croûte lunaire, mais on devrait parler de régolithe.

While the moon and sun spend equal time above the horizon, when they are both present, only a solar bow can be seen. This, by itself, means that the lunar rainbow could form only half as often. Further, the moon goes through phases, and so even at night may not contribute enough light to produce a discernible bow. Finally, the convective showers in which the rainbow is frequently seen are much less common at night.

A lunar halo is a luminous ring that is sometimes seen surrounding the moon. Some parts of the halo are very bright, others are not very bright. Sometimes, only a part of the ring is visible. The halo is produced as moonlight is reflected and refracted through tiny, flat ice crystals in the atmosphere. L'année lunaire compte 12 mois qui ont alternativement 30 et 29 jours (sauf le dernier mois qui peut selon les années compter 29 ou 30 jours). Une année dure donc 354 ou 355 jours, et 33 années grégoriennes correspondent à 34 années lunaires.

Also shown on Figure 1 are the sensitivity of the Apollo lunar seismometer and the Viking Martian seismometer. Many of the detected seismic events on the Moon were barely above the sensitivity threshold of the Apollo instrument. The background noise level on the Moon was below the instrumental sensitivity except at the times of sunrise and sunset, when thermal disturbances caused large ground noise.

After the lunar module of Apollo 14 set down on the Moon, Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell deployed the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) and collected samples of lunar material. The ALSEP scientific experiments included a seismometer sensitive to slight lunar surface movements, and charged particle detectors which measured the solar wind.
