Lorsqu'un séisme sous-marin ou une éruption volcanique se produisent, ils envoient une série de violentes ondes de choc dans toutes les directions. Le tsunami ainsi créé peut n'avoir que dix centimètres de hauteur en mer, mais cette vague parcourt plus de 8OO kilomètres à l'heure, passant sous les navires sans nécessairement être ressentie ou repérée.
