A flat plate with multiple wells used as small test tubes.

Assays of biochemical systems are carried out on a large scale in both industry and academia, so it is desirable to have an apparatus that allows these assays to be performed in a convenient and inexpensive fashion. Because they are relatively easy to handle and low in cost, microplates are often used for such studies. Microplates typically consist of a plurality of individual wells formed of polymeric materials. Each well includes sidewalls and a bottom so that an aliquot of a sample may be placed within each well. The wells may be arranged in relatively close proximity in a matrix pattern, allowing samples to be studied individually or as a group. Common sizes for microplates include matrices having dimensions of 4x6 (24 wells) or 8x12 (96 wells), although larger microplates are also used that may include matrices of hundreds or even thousands of wells.

Si le point de fin de titrage coïncide exactement avec l'addition d'une équivalence chimique exacte, on l'appelle le point d'équivalence ou le point de fin de titrage stœchiométrique ou théorique; la quantité de B ajoutée permet de trouver la quantité initiale de A, les quantités relatives de A et de B réagissant étant connues à partir de la stœchiométrie de la réaction ou d'une autre façon.

Divers qualificatifs pour les titrages peuvent refléter la nature de la réaction entre A et B. Ainsi, il existe des titrages acide-base, complexométrique, chélatométrique, d'oxydoréduction ou de précipitation. De plus, le terme peut aussi refléter la nature du titrant, tel qu'acidimétrique, alcalimétrique ou iodométrique ainsi que les titrages coulométriques dans lesquels le titrant est généré électrolytiquement plutôt que d'être ajouté sous la forme d'une solution étalon.

... back-titration will often yield useful results. In this technique, a measured amount of the reagent, which would normally be the titrant, is added to the sample so that there is a slight excess.
