Habituellement, on identifie les fils d'après leur calibre ou grosseur, et cette grandeur est fondée sur l'«American Wire Gauge», ou calibre AWG. Dans le sytème AWG, le diamètre croit alors que la valeur gauge décroit. A strain gage that detects change in strain by measuring the change in frequency of a wire under tension whose length is changed by the strain of the surface on which the gage is attached.
