Procédé Thomas. Il fut le co-inventeur en 1876 d’une technique qui porte son nom de conversion de la fonte en acier. Ce procédé est une adaptation du convertisseur Bessemer au traitement des fontes phosphoreuses; grâce à l'emploi d’additifs qui rendent également indispensable l'adoption d’un revêtement réfractaire également basique de la paroi interne des convertisseurs. 3, fiche 1, Français, - convertisseur%20basique

En aciérie, [le convertisseur] a la forme d’une grosse cornue à col court, mobile autour d’un axe horizontal. Il est en tôle d’acier garnie intérieurement soit d’un revêtement acide(convertisseur Bessemer), soit d’un revêtement basique(convertisseur Thomas).
